New friends?

I walked out to the courtyard at school. There were only a few people outside, sitting on benches and under trees, but I ignored them and sat down underneath the first tree I came across. I opened up my books and begin looking over papers for my upcoming science midterm. I'm really struggling to understand this latest topic that Mr Wilzac taught us. I can't grasp the electronic structure of atoms. Something with the composition doesn't seem to make sense to me. I know I have no choice other than to study and keep moving forward, so that's exactly what I'll do.

After studying for about 20 minutes I noticed someone was standing in front of me. I looked up and I saw Sal from science class. His full name is Salvador Esquardo, but who wants to say Salvador in a friendly conversation?
         That's what I thought.
"You been struggling with this stuff too?" He said, looking down at me. I hadn't even realized he walked up to me. He always seemed to say things that would make you think he's confident but the way words fall out of his mouth just never seem to match it. "It's really confusing. I watched the videos but it still doesn't make sense."
"Same here. I pretty sure that I'm just skipping a big step, and I can't figure out what it is."
"Do you wanna work together to see if we can figure this out." Sal said nervously.
"Sure. We can try it, but I can't guarantee anything." I said standoffishly.
We studied together for about 10 minutes before I started to realized that he wasn't as weird as I had thought he was. We ended up figuring out everything we didn't understand in the end. After half an hour. Since we still had another 20 minutes until the exam we decided to slowly make our way over to Mr. Wilzac's room. We still arrived early, so I asked Mr Wilzac a few questions just for clarification. We were both feeling pretty confident about this exam.

I finally finished my midterm. I walk out of Mr Wilzac's room feeling refreshed. I know I just aced that test!
On the way out Sal stops me, whispering harshly, "Wait for me? I've got like two things left. Please?" He said, which confused me because I'd never really spent much time with him- other than today in the courtyard. I nod silently and walk out the door to go sit on the nearest bench I see. He comes flying out the door less than a minute later.
"Oh. You actually waited." He said, surprised. "I thought for sure that you were just gonna walk away and ignore me." Sal said, a smirk playing at his lips.
"Jeez Sal, I'm not always mean." I said, pretending to be offended.
"Well... I don't know about tha-" he started but I cut him off.
"Oh shut up. I didn't have to wait for you to finish your test, but I did."
"Thanks for that..." There were a couple seconds of silence while we walked over to the cafeteria. Not the weird kind though, it was the comfortable like 'we're- friends-ish -so -it's -ok' kind of silence. It was nice, but then he ruined it. "We should start studying together!"
I stare at him while I figured out what he was saying... I have a slow brain, give me some time. Once I realized what he was saying, I replied with a "Yeah! Let's do it!" I was actually kind of excited for something for the first time in a while.
I mean, think about it. He's definitely not ugly and he's got a pretty good personality from what I've seen. If something happened between us I wouldn't be mad, so why not?
