Flashback
"You did it. You actually did it Nova". Adelaide happily yelled out as her daughter took her first steps. The confused one year old looked up at her loving mother before falling back on the floor. Pride filled the mom for a moment before her joyous laugh echoed throughout the room. Moments like these she wished would never end she thought.

"Eve. GENEVIEVE ADELAIDE WINSTON". A loud voice boomed throughout the room awakening me from my peaceful slumber. My head instantly shot up, meeting the angry face of my beloved mother.

I took into account my surroundings remembering I was currently having dinner at my mom's new "boy toy of the week" house. This ones name was Zed. He had dirty blonde hair falling just below his shoulders and soft baby blue eyes. He was the definition of a surfer which seemed to be my moms type these days. He looked as if he was currently in college or just got out. The most surprising thing is she hasn't broken up with him yet. I damn well placed a bet with myself that they wouldn't last a week and they made it to a month.

"It is very rude to be sleeping when having a dinner at a guest's house". My mothers voice broke me out of my thoughts. Her brown hair fanning over her face to which she quickly brushed off. Her vibrant green eyes glared very intently at me from across the table.

I dropped my eyes immediately feeling the intensity of her glare overwhelming me. "I'm sorry mother, I've just had a long day at school. That's it". The words left my mouth just as quickly as they entered.

Those were the last words to leave my mouth for the rest of the night. Those were the last words she would allow me to speak, or she would more than likely kill me when I get home.

I brushed a stray golden lock from my face and tucked it behind my ear. I began to pick at my fingertips which is a long time habit due to my anxiety. The tension between my mom and I were so thick you can cut like a knife. If looks could kill I definitely would be farther than six feet underneath. This didn't stop her from fawning over her "boy toy" the whole night.

My mother got up from the table and began to clean up along with zed signaling the end of this horrific dinner. I helped to clear a few plates before quickly being ushered to the living room. Adults.

In what seemed like forever it was time to leave and go to our humble abode as my dad used to call it. We unfortunately lost him many years ago when I was seven due to the monster that has plagued my family for years. The monster origins remains the greatest mystery to mankind and how to defeat it still is unknown. The day my father died might as well have been the worst day my life. Due to being only seven at the time and now being seventeen I barely remember what happened.

Flashback
"Addy I'm tired I can't do this anymore. I tired of having it take away everything that's good for me. I -I-I just.......can't". Lennon, obviously distressed furiously wiped tears from his eyes as if they would heal him fro his pain.

He let out a small cry of pain as a he looked up at his wife with a tear streaked face. His once stunningly bright blue eyes was now of sadness and the blonde hair that once flowed freely was now a tangled rat's nest in top of his head.

"What do you mean you can't do it anymore. You have to find the will to fight. For me and for Coraline. We can't do this without you. We won't make it..........I won't make it". Adelaide just about yelled out while whispering the last part.

Tears began to pour out of her eyes as if they had suddenly become a fountain. Adelaide embraced her husband in tight hold hoping it would help him to not come apart. If he continued on this path the demon would definitely come and take his life.

"Mommy". A voice yelled making her come out of the embrace and breaking her out of her thoughts. She looked down and saw her daughter with multiple types of paint all over her face and hands. A smile became implanted on her face as she gazed at the site.

"Looks like you made a huge mess of yourself. Well I guess it's best we get you cleaned up now". Her smile now very faint as she turns towards her husband and place a loving hands on his shoulder wiping away an escaped tear.

"We will figure this out. Don't give up just yet. I love you and have a nice day at work". She placed a small kiss on her husband's cheek before quickly ushering her young daughter to the bathroom.

Later that day.

Phone ringing. Genevieve playing in the room next door with building blocks. Adelaide picks up the phone while still preparing dinner.

"Hello. This is Adelaide speaking".

"Hello. Is this the wife of Lennon Winston"

"Yes this is she. Is everything ok". Her voice replied shakily, reminiscing of earlier conversations and fearing the worst.

The words Adelaide feared hearing was spoken signaling the end of of a joyous life and the beginning of what would come to be some of the worst.

Adelaide slammed the phone back into its charging post before rushing to the room her daughter was playing in. She quickly grabbed her and a few belongings before rushing to a nearby neighbor.

Adelaide flew through the streets and rushed over to the familiar lake to which she and her lover shared their first kiss. Questions came up in her mind as fast as she was driving the blue Honda she called her own. Some part of her hopped that her Lennon may still be alive and have a fighting chance however, she knew these chances were about slim to none.

She arrived at the scene surrounded by yellow tape and an enormous amount of flashing lights. The head officer greeted her as he begrudgingly brought her to what looked look like a body bag. The medical officer unzipped only to find what was left of her husband.

His face pale blue while his lips were much darker in color. His expression was calm and it looked as if all his worries had been washed off in the water. I kissed my pointer and middle finger and gently placed them on his lips while a stray tear quietly escaped.

"Until we meet again".
Flashback end

When they found his body in the water they ruled it an accidental drowning but I knew the monster had gotten to him. I heard my mom talking about the full story to one of her friends a couple years after it happened which is how I figured it out.

When the monster has been awakened it is extremely difficult to put it back to sleep. If it ever does sleep, which is still a question that resonates on my mind even today.

I had been staring at the window as the trees zipped by and the house began to reach my view. Our small run down mill of a house came into view and I smiled at the site. It has been very difficult to keep up with the repairs being in a single parent household but I don't really mind.

As soon as my mom parked I hurriedly jumped out making a beeline for my room. It was the only place I felt safe and can just feel like myself. I grabbed my favorite pair of blue biker shorts, a small white tank top and my towel to take a shower. It had been a long day and I just would like to get rid of the gunk.

After turning off the water I grabbed my clothes and put them on. I rushed too bed while rubbing my eyes and throwing my hair up into a quick ponytail.

Multiple thoughts sat in my mind, seemingly finding it hard to get out. However now, sleep was the only important thing on my mind right now. Lights out.
