This is an animal cell.  (Excuse my fluctuating handwriting and awful drawing skills - I really don't know what I'm doing.)

An animal cell consists of several different components (scientifically known as subcellular structures) - for GCSE, these are all we need to know:

1. The Cell Membrane:
- this holds the cell together, surrounding it.  It also controls what substances go in and out.

2. The Cytoplasm:
- this is a gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions in the cell happen.  It contains enzymes (biological catalysts) that control these chemical reactions.

3. The Mitochondria:
- these are found in the cytoplasm and are where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place.  Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work.

4. The Nucleus:
- this controls the cell and contains all the genetic information necessary for the cell to function.  It is present in all cells (with some exceptions, e.g the red blood cell).

5. The Ribosomes
- these are where proteins are made in the cell.  (The site of protein synthesis).

THE PLANT CELL
(oh heck, I just realised I have to go and draw again.)

The animal cell shares some subcellular structures with the plant cell, such as:- nucleus,- ribosomes,- cytoplasm,- cell membrane and- mitochondria

Actually, the animal cell shares all its subcellular structures with the plant cell.  The plant cell, however, was like that kid in class who busted out ever dad dance move ever created in the span of two Michael Jackson songs and a Rick Roll.  The plant cell is individual, having some of it's own subcellular structures.  These include:

1. Rigid Cell Wall:
- this is made of cellulose.  It's job is to support the cell and strengthen it.

2. Chloroplasts:
- these are where photosynthesis occurs, which makes food for the plant.  They contain a green substance called chlorophyll, which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis.

3. Permanent Vacuole
- this contains cell sap; a weak solution of sugar and salts.
