yeah it's another name-related chapter
woooo bet u guys missed these 🤪🤪

i didn't stick all the name cliches together because there's literally so much to talk about and i don't wanna bore u guys because i ramble.. which is kind of my job so uh-

anyways here's some examples of overused names:

- alex (or any variation; alec, alix, etc)
- j names (jason, james, jack, jackson)
- hunter
- ryder
- emma / emily
- gemstone names??? (ruby, sapphire, emerald, etc.)
- flower names (lily, rose, daisy, ive even seen some people naming their characters PETAL?? BDJDHDJ)
- ava (avas are all hellspawn idc)
- colour names (scarlet, violet, AQUA??? y'all's parents hate you i stg)

there are SO many more but i'm not really going to make an entire page of just overused names, so let's talk about this cliche for a bit!

there is absolutely nothing wrong with overused names, they're all very great names and overused things are often used so commonly for a reason, BUT they're so common that they seem to make an appearance in almost any book i've read here, and after a while it gets annoying.

when i think of a character named emma, what book would i be thinking of? there could be so many emmas in so many books, so we want a distinctive name, not a very generic one.

when i think of the love interest named jason am i thinking of jason dean from heathers??? god i hope not. actually yeah he's rlly hot hi hello step on me sir idc if you murder people 😁😁

anyways

i also find it really odd when authors theme character names. i'll give you some random example. it's gonna be written badly but i don't care, it gets the point across.

"Hi, my name is Orchid Lily Oaks and this is the story of how i got absolutely RAILED by that bad boy next door 🥵🥵👹😍😍. It all started when my sister, Magnolia Rose Oaks-"

now first of all, if you start a non satirical story with "Hi, my name is-", i am leaving. no. absolutely not. goodbye. seeing myself out.

i'll talk about that later,
BUT
the themed names are very very tacky. it would make sense in some situations, like in a weird fictional fairy world where magical creatures have names kind of themed to the story.. i don't know, im trying to reason with you here 🥲 but other than that and maybe some other instances, there ain't NO REASON for the little clique of mean girls to be named Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. okay? okay cool.
