[Open on a shot of a dive bar in the middle of nowhere at night. The words 'Missouri, 1960' appear on the screen. Cut to the interior of the bar. A young man approaches the bar. He speaks with a fairly subtle Russian accent. It is Ivan, 20 years old]
Ivan: Another vodka. And a stiff whiskey.
[He puts a clump of notes on the bar and winks to the bartender, who nods. Cut to the exterior of the bar. A dark car pulls up. Cut back inside. The bartender gives Ivan a glass of vodka and a glass of whiskey. Ivan returns to his booth. David, 19 years younger enters the bar. He looks around before approaching the bar. Cut to Ivan in his booth. He reaches into the whiskey bottle and takes out a small pouch of cocaine. He smiles, tucks the pouch into his inside pocket and takes a drink from the whiskey glass. In the background, the bartender is seen pointing towards Ivan's booth. David nods and walks over to Ivan. He sits down opposite him]
Ivan: What the fuck is this?
David: You're Ivan?
Ivan: Who's asking?
[David looks around comically]
David: Well, I am.
Ivan: So, you're a fucking comedian, huh? What do you want?
David: My wallet.
Ivan: What?
David: My wallet, you stole it from me a couple of days ago. I would like it back.
Ivan: I don't know what you're talking about.
David: I'm assuming you've spent all the money in it by now. Probably on dope and booze, right?
[Ivan takes out a leather wallet from his pocket and puts it on the table]
Ivan: You're David Clarkson, then?
[David takes the wallet and shakes it upside down. A few coins and a five dollar bill fall out]
David: That's right. There were about five hundred dollars in this wallet the last time I checked.
Ivan: You asked for your wallet back, not the money, and you've got the wallet now, so fuck off.
[David chuckles. He takes out a pack of cigarettes and offers Ivan one. Ivan takes it cautiously. He lights it]
David: Five hundred dollars. Bet that was quite the score for you, wasn't it. You're Russian, aren't you, Ivan.
Ivan: Vot tak. (That's right)
David: Ya tak i dumal. (I thought so). I have an offer for you. You ever heard of the Cossacks?
Ivan: Might've done.
David: That's what I want you to be for me. My own Cossack. My personal fuckin' red army. I've heard you're a hard motherfucker, and I'm interested in your services.
Ivan: What are you talking about?
David: I want you to do some jobs for me. And trust me, by the end of it you're gonna have made much more than 500 dollars.
[David takes out a pen and writes out his phone number on the five dollar bill on the table. He pushes it towards Ivan]
David: If you have a break from doing lines and jerking off then give me a call.
[David stands]
David: Oh, and remember the Cossacks.
[The 'Cossacks song' sung by the red army choir begins to play faintly, gradually getting louder]
[David exits. Ivan looks down at the five dollar bill as the 'Cossacks song grows louder still. Cut to the exterior of the bar]
[The title 'Black Hollow appears on screen]
[Fade to black]
