Jack looked up at the stars, they shined aggressively down at him. His brown eyes scanned the dark skies, they were exhausted with dark bags under. Jack moved his long black hair to the side and adjusted his mask that covered half his face. His pale skin stuck out in the dark clothing he had. Jack looked to his side.
Bear, his brother was analyzing the stone brick streets, he is a tall larger teenager with dirty blond hair that split in the middle, he had a mask covering his whole face with only two large eye holes showing his orange eyes. He has a black trench coat with stitched-up pants. He poked out of the alley and saw the stone houses had wood rooftops and small windows.
"It's empty." Bear said in a soft deep voice.
Jack nods and Bear dashes across the street to another alleyway, Jack follows and they go to the backside of a house.
There's a shutter by the door, Bear elbows it forcibly to open it and he and Jack jump into the house.
They're in a kitchen, Bear takes out a sack and rummages through the cabinets. Jack continued walking to a living room lit by a small candle.
"Who's house is this?" Jack whispers.
"A volunteer guard's, he usually does the night shift." Bear puts a lot of bread and continues talking. "His parets wemt away for the munth"
"Eh right." Jack looked at some sock puppets laying on a small wooden box. He goes up a flight of stairs leading to multiple rooms. Jack enters one of them and goes to a desk.
He opens a container with stacks of coins, Jack takes out a small pouch and puts the coins in. He looks around the room and sees a longsword in a glass box. It reflected the darkroom and the edges shined sharply.
That's not a volunteer sword Jack thought to himself. He left the room to tell Bear.
A doorknob turned outside as Jack was at the top of the stairs, he dropped to the floor softly.
Bear is by the shutter, he can leave unnoticed, I can jump out of a 2nd story or run towards the door. Jack thinks.
A person enters, Jack can't tell what he looks like, except he's holding a baton.
A floorboard creaks by the kitchen, Bear is darting to move. Jack gets ready to run to the door.
"I see you!" The person said sternly, he gripped his baton.
Bear charged towards the person and shoved him aside. Jack saw him carrying a large bag running out the door.
Jack quickly went downstairs. The person rose and struck Jack on the back with his baton.
Jack fell to the ground groaning, he turned around and saw the person, a medium-skinned boy with light brown hair and eyes. He looked familiar.
"Who are you!" The person grabbed Jack's mask and snatched it off his face.
"Chris!" Jack yelled in realization.
"You're Chris?" The person asked holding down Jack by his arms.
"No, you're Chris! I'm Jack! I was your friend! As a kid!"
"As in Bear and Jack?" The person loosens his grip on Jack.
"Yes, Bear and Jack,"
Chris stands up and offers his hand to help Jack.
Jack rejects his hand and stands up on his own and Chris hugs him, he just stands there awkwardly accepting the hug.
"You have long hair?" Chris grabs a candle near him to expose both of them.
Chris is slightly taller than Jack, he has short combed light brown hair with soft brown eyes and medium skin. He has a light chest piece of armor on him with brown pants below.
"I grew it out last year." Jack answers.
"Oh wow, fits your little rebel look." Chris holds on to the word rebel in his mind.
Jack gives an awkward look.
"W-what are you doing stealing from my house?"
"Eh, "
"Who was that with you?"
"Bear, as in Bear and Jack."
"Bear?!" Chris said surprised. "Why's he so tall? Wasn't he shorter than us?"
"Three years ago he was. Guess he was properly fed at the camps and grew."
"So I'm imagining he stole food. What'd you get?" Chris sticks his hand out to receive whatever Jack has.
Jack inhales deeply, he takes out a much if could from his hoodie and places it on Chris's hand, he breathes out.
"Thank you, but why?" Chris asks.
"Eh, well" Jack paused for a second hesitantly. "You've been doing good Chris, two-story house?! That's amazing!" Jack lightly smiles while looking at the house. "Me and Bear, not so much, the infantry dropped us, and even before that we weren't doing that well due to our social standing" Jack sadly said holding back that he can barely afford to live in his own house.
"I'm sorry to hear that, well I've done good for myself, you can borrow some money if you ever need it Alright?" Chris says feeling that it's now his responsibility to take care of the two as if he was their older brother. Just like before.
"Thanks. You know, we should hang out tomorrow, it has been a while like you said" Jack thinks it's a good idea for him, Chris, and Bear to hang out like old times.
"Alright, let's meet at our old spot, urm, Glowstone was it?" Chris asks if that's where they used to hang out.
"Eh yeah" Jack confirms and after planning when to go there he says goodbye to Chris and leaves his house with a little bit of borrowed money from him. Jack is walking down to his house and sees Bear running up to him
"Phew! That was close wasn't it?" Bear said exhausted from running
"Actually you left me to get caught" Jack looked at Bear surprised he didn't know he was caught.
"Oh, sorry Jack" Bear said hoping Jack wouldn't make him give his food to him. "Wait, why aren't you with the guards then?" Bear grabs Jack and tries to discreetly lead him to safety while he looks around to see if there are any guards.
"Actually turns out it was Chris! Lucky me right" Jack said looking at a surprised Bear.
"What? I thought we'd never find him again after the camps!" Bear shakes Jack happily "How's he been?"
"He's been great really, way better than us actually" Jack assures Bear "I told him we'd meet up at our old hangout tomorrow," He says as Bear nods in approval.
Jack and Bear split up and walk to their own houses in the dark. Bear was excited to see Chris while Jack stayed up overthinking the past.
