A single glance, that's all it took for my life to change irrevocably.
A single glance and he was enthralled.
A single glance and he decided to take her.
And with that fleeting look, my sister was gone, taken from me, but I will get her back. She w...
"Touch her again and I'll kill you," I snarled blinking rapidly and quaking on my knees, hands outstretched on the walls, trying to keep awake long enough to rescue her, fighting against whatever had entered my bloodstream with all that I had.
"Will you though? Because as I see it, I'm the only one here with any leverage, seeing as I've got her here with me, at my will." He gloated, holding the small knife to her throat, forcing more tears to leave her eyes as she stilled her frantic struggles.
"Emma I swear I'll get you back baby girl, I promise you with everything in me sweetie-" I sobbed.
"No. She's mine." he cut me off, rage filling his face, tightening his hold on her to the point that pain was clearly displayed on her face as she screamed at me to save her. To be her strength when she truly needed me.
I scrambled as hard as I could to stand, falling against the wall as I tried to reach them. No. No. No. Get up. GET UP! I screamed in my mind, gasping for breath as my legs lost all feeling remaining in them, causing me to slump to the ground once more.
I resorted to crawling, dragging myself forward with bloodied hands. Anything to save her. To reach her.
The man looked down at me with his evil, dark eyes, growling at my persistence to reach her. He moved towards me before looking past me and nodding once.
I looked back just in time to see a shoe coming down on me, causing Emma to let out a chilling scream sure to haunt me for the rest of my life as I faded from reality. I slipped into a pool of black as she was dragged away, kicking and screaming as I failed for the first time to save her from a bad man in the night.

The light hurt. That was the only thing I knew for sure, as I squinted forward, unable to move my head from whatever cradled it so tightly.
There was an odd sound in the background, kind of like an alarm that no one would turn off, an incessant beeping, grating on my nerves. It sounded familiar, like I had heard it before but not in a very long time.
It smelled wrong, like old socks and basements and pine sol all mixed in one. The last time I had smelled something like this was when Em fell and hit her head 3 years ago and nearly gave me a heart attack.
Emma... Why was there something missing when I thought about her? Why couldn't I remember where I was?
There was a shuffling sound before a head appeared in my vision, cutting off the light that seemed intent on blinding me. The woman was speaking, saying something, but I couldn't make it out with all the noise around me.
Just when were they going to turn off that damn alarm? All it was doing was getting louder with less time between each squeal.
There was a light in my eyes now, coming from a pen the woman was using, one then the other. I could make out some of her voice now.
"-ey, can you hear me? I need you to answer some questions. You were in an attack, you were hurt badly, do you remember who did this to you?" She questioned while another face, this time male, appeared in my peripherals. I didn't understand her words, even as I heard them. The man was dressed, as far as I could see, in a police uniform, the lapels pressed firmly down with something on the edge of both. He had a frown on his face, staring at my eyes so intently that I had to look away.
A hospital. That's where I was.
I moved my tongue in my mouth to speak. It felt dry and dusty. The noise that left me inhuman as the air went through my throat, burning it in an odd way. The nurse moved and a cup was placed on my bottom lip, slowly raising until I had just enough to swallow. I opened my mouth once more, feeling slightly better,
"Whe-ngnh- Where's Em?" I coughed halfway through, sending unimaginable pain through my neck.
The other two looked at each other, I could see the concern in their eyes. The officer turned to me.
"Ma'am, you were involved in an attack 2 days ago, who's Em? Was she there with you?" I could see the top of a pad of paper as he concentrated on me.
2 days? An attack? I was attacked? I struggled to grasp what he said, my mind still feeling foggy. One of his questions causing my chest to spasm as I tried to see Emma, my eyes shooting around frantically. My headache increased with every move of my eyes until images started to appear in my mind, blocking my sight. Events laid out in my head, each one causing me to panic more and more until I broke.
"Emma! He took her. He took her! He took her! HE TOOK HER! HE TOOK HER!!! HE TOO-" I started chanting, getting louder and faster with my cries in time with that god awful machine I was connected to, struggling to let the officer know what was so wrong.
"What? Who did he take?" The officer cut me off with an alarmed look, "Ma'am, what happened? Who was taken?"
"He took her! He took my sister!" I managed to get out as the pain in my back overwhelmed me, the nurse frantically moving just out of my sight. I struggled to breathe, trying to force the pain away so I could move. The nurse stopped moving and her hands when to my shoulders, holding me down, as whatever she'd done took a hold of me, sending my mind away to the dark place once more, to a place that I became just as useless as I felt.
