Chapter 4- Show Off
I wrapped my wrists in the silk, determined to at least do one small trick that day. I needed to show Ryo I could learn quickly so she wouldn’t consider me a waste of her time.
I had been going for hours starting before the sun even rose. My stomach roared from hunger and my muscles were still sore from my other practice sessions.
I was doing horridly. I couldn’t seem to do a thing right and I could tell Ryo was becoming slightly frustrated. She understood why I couldn’t focus though; Hyun was there watching.
I clenched my teeth. Beads of sweat coated my body, soaking through my leotard. It was unusual to see someone there who wasn’t sweating so I didn’t mind too much save for the discomfort it caused. With every bit of energy I had, I pulled myself up about halfway then wrapped my foot in order to take the rope out and make a sort of stand for myself.
“You’ve got it all wrong.” Hyun shouted from the lowest stand. “Perhaps Ryo shouldn’t be the one teaching you.”
I ignored him as Ryo suggested after replying to him in Chinese. It must have been unfriendly because Hyun smirked, not amused.
I couldn’t stay up any longer so I slowly climbed down, catching my breath. I knew learning to ribbon dance would be hard but I had never known it would be that exhausting.
Ryo tossed me a towel where I sat. “We’re done for today.”
“I’m sorry. I can try harder-“
“It’s not you.”
I wasn’t so sure about that. Hyun’s narrow eyes glinted with disdain as he looked at me. As his gaze fell over Ryo, he scoffed. “Let’s go.” He took her arm but she jerked away to gather her things.
“Let me talk with Bella.”
He glared down at her, being at least a foot taller. “Fine. Hurry though.”
I took a drink from my canteen and wiped sweat onto the towel. Ryo squatted beside me, sensing my anger. I was mostly angry with myself for being such a failure but also with Hyun for the way he treated her.
“Bella, I told you in the beginning it would take a lot of practice. I see that you’re trying hard and I’m going to teach you so don’t be angry because you didn’t get it first try.”
I nodded. “I’m sorry.”
“No apologies needed. Take this city off and when we move on, we’ll try again. Keep up with your stretches though.”
“Alright. Thank you.”
She nodded her goodbye, following Hyun out of the front entrance to the tent.
