It was hard for her to keep her eyes open. There she was, lying on the floor of her own balcony, her body nearly emptied of her blood. She kept staring at her attacker despite the entire blur. And she remembered how it came out of nowhere, to tear through her ordinary night. Her cell phone lying close to her, her call had not ended yet. On the other side, her boyfriend was continuously shouting her name after having heard her shriek. Greatly weakened, her eyelids started to get heavy. As she knew she would not be able to hang in any longer, only one thought started resonating into her ears: “I want to live...”  The last thing she saw was the mystical creature approaching her. It was then black everywhere. Her eyes would not open. She felt a cold liquid pouring into her mouth and was left with no other option but to drink it. It made her somehow feel better but did not stop her from fainting right afterwards.

Her eyes shot open. Despite the blackness of the night surrounding her, she could see every detail, the night somehow clear as the day. She stood up cautiously and looked at the trees surrounding her. Where was she? She looked for her cell phone but it was nowhere to be found. Memories of her grandfather’s accident kept striking into her mind. She pressed the palms of her hands hard on her face to seek for comfort but they were so cold. She put her hands away and looked around, her soul now dwelling with a new feeling, that of hunger. It was so unbearable as if she had not had any meal for ages. Her clothes were in terrible shape but the chill of the night did not perturb her at all. Her nose picked up a scent, smelling so delicious that she started running towards the source as fast as she could. The trees swept by her sides so fast. She never knew she was able to move so swiftly before and yet her eyes seemed to be adapted to that newly acquired skill as she was able to avoid every obstacle on her way to get to her destination faster.

She stopped, with her jaw wide open and her eyes filled with horror. The mutilated body of her boyfriend was lying on the bloodied grass in front of her. She came closer, reluctantly, to have a better view of the mess. Suddenly, without knowing why, she grabbed the corpse and started drinking the remaining blood. A strange high feeling of twisted pleasure climbed up her brain and down her spine as she continued feeding. She was not going to let any of this precious fluid go wasted, especially not his. But at that moment, she could not care less about whose blood it was. The taste of blood had never been so relishing and addictive before, compared to what her memories had to say, when as a child, she used to lick the blood gushing out of her petty wounds.

She heard footsteps approaching and stopped drinking at once. The presence was that of another one from her own kind. “Probably a rival, who wanted to fight for the food,” she thought. Her whole body composure shifted to an attacking position: she bared her fangs and stayed in a crouched position, ready to engage the approaching opponent. Out of a bush, came out a familiar figure. Looking at its face, she was seized with terror. It was that of her attacker from the previous night. But something caught her attention. The eyes of the young man were very gentle and looked so human, unlike earlier where they were full of hunger and the eyeballs were completely shrouded in a pitch black colour, concealing the white parts. He kept walking towards her while she was unable to do anything and was frozen on the spot.

Despite her inability to focus on her thoughts, she still tried to think of her options at hand but nothing seemed to be good enough to actually work. She somehow knew that the man in front of her was much stronger and faster than her. She started walking backwards carefully, without laying an eye off him.  However, the latter stopped on seeing her reaction. Instead, he moved his left hand forward, murmuring something. Despite the few miles separating them, she could hear his melodious voice clearly and could not believe what he had just told her. She smiled, swept the blood off her mouth with her hand and walked towards her new mate, with an agreeing stare. His black hair was parted in the middle in front, with a few bangs at each corner of his forehead and the rest of his hair swept back. His eyes were so commanding but yet so full of affection at the same time. He smiled, showing his perfectly aligned teeth, with the canines longer than those of the normal human. His skin was of a strikingly very pale tone and as she grabbed his hand, his touch was still as cold as it was before.

Under the faint light of the crescent moon, they walked away, holding hands, as they vanished into the heavy fog lying in the humid forest.
