So, Aaron Burr always kept a journal, and he would send it to a woman in his life for them to read. First his sister Sally, then Theodosia Sr., and then Theo Jr.. In his journals, he writes many entertaining stories. In a few entries, he writes about an umbrella he had, but this was no ordinary umbrella. This umbrella, "had a dirk in the handle," to put it in his own words. He actually used it to attack a guy that tried to make him put out his candle once.
Unfortunately, he lost his umbrella writing, "you know my umbrella is on a voyage." This clearly affected him deeply, as he also writes, “my umbrella hung heavy at my heart” after losing it.
I love learning about Aaron Burr.
