he gets that from me

Start from the beginning

"Oh, good. That monster was getting scary." Jennie teased as she opened the cookie car to pull one free, offering it to her son with a small smile. "But first, your payment for this cookie is to give me a kiss."

"Fine." Curtis sighed with a playful roll of his eyes.

Jennie chuckled as the little boy stepped closer to her before she leaned down to offer her cheek to her son, Curtis pressing a sloppy kiss to her cheek before he reached out to snatch the cookie from her hand.

"Mine!" Curtis yelled as he turned to run away. "The monster is back!"

"Well, that monster needs to eat his cookie and then go to bed!" Jennie replied, the brunette shaking her head as she watched him vanish around the corner. "I don't know how I'm managing to do this on my own."

Last night I heard him pray

Lord, help me and mama make it through

And tell daddy we'll be okay

"Come on, boy," Jennie grumbled as she stood in the backyard with her arms crossed over her chest, the brunette shifting from side to side as she felt her teeth shattering. "I'm going to freeze to death out here."

Cloud moved throughout the backyard before he finally found a spot behind the tree, Jennie breathing a sigh of relief as the dog took care of his business before trotting towards the brunette and nudging against her leg.

"You took your sweet time tonight, huh?" Jennie chuckled as she ruffled his golden fur before they moved towards the patio doors, stepping aside to let Cloud in before she followed behind him and flicked the lock.

Jennie locked up and flipped the lights off from downstairs before quietly making her way up the stairs, her feet carrying her down the hallway as Cloud scurried past her and brushed his way into Curtis' room.

Rolling her eyes, Jennie trailed behind the dog before peeking around the doorway and pausing at the sight of Curtis knelt before the bed with his hands pressed together and his eyes squeezed tight.

"Hi God," The little boy mumbled, his voice low and calm. "I just wanted to say hi to Momma and I wanted to tell her that I miss her lots and lots. Mommy does too. We miss her smiles and her jokes and I really miss her hugs."

Jennie felt tears pushing hard at the backs of her eyes as she fell against the doorway and watched her son, Curtis shifting on his knees as he released a loud breath before licking his lips anxiously.

"God, can you tell Momma that we're happy?" Curtis whispered, his brows furrowing. "We miss her, but we're happy. Mommy even says that she met a nice lady and that they may go on a date. I like her. Her name is Ms. Jisoo."

Pressing a hand to her chest, Jennie felt the tears give way under the pressure as they raced down the length of her cheeks while her lower lip quivered; sometimes she forget just how precious her son was.

She had been terrified to tell him about Jisoo, terrified that the little boy wouldn't understand how she was feeling; she didn't want to ever think that she was going to try and replace Lisa in his life.

Lisa would always be his mother and there was no way anyone could ever take the spot that filled his heart. Even after three years, Lisa was the one person who shone the brightest in Curtis' heart.

"We're gonna be okay, Mommy says so." Curtis chirped, nodding his head happily. "God, just make sure Momma knows that we light a candle for her every night and that I love her very, very much. Upside down and inside out."

The child allowed his eyes to flutter open before he grappled onto his bedspread and hauled himself into his bed, his gaze bouncing towards the doorway where his mother stood causing him to frown.

"Mommy, why are you crying?" Curtis demanded, fear in his voice.

"I'm okay. They're happy tears." Jennie assured him as she crossed the room to lean down and press a long kiss to the seven-year-old's head, lingering for a long moment. "I love you so very much, Curtis."

"Upside down?" Curtis smiled.

"And inside out, baby." Jennie nodded, her hand reaching up to brush dark locks from her son's gaze before she tilted her head slightly. "Alright, little man, time for bed. Have good dreams for me, okay?"

"Okay, Mommy."

"Ready to say night to Momma?" Jennie asked as she reached for the picture resting on the bedside table, the brunette offering it to her son.

"Night, Momma." Curtis whispered as he dropped a kiss to the photo of him and Lisa, the little boy staring down at the frozen memory. "I love you, and I hope you're okay. I'll see you one day, okay?"

Jennie smiled adoringly at the little boy before he offered her the picture and she returned it to the bedside table, the woman leaning over to flick off his bedside lamp as she dropped one last kiss to her son's forehead.

"I love you, Curtis." Jennie murmured.

"I love you more than most. " The little boy yawned, snuggling into his bed. "Don't wake me up tomorrow."

"I won't." Jennie chuckled as she moved to leave the room, the woman pausing with her finger over the light switch as she watched Cloud cuddle against her son as he drifted off. "Goodnight, baby."

He said he sure misses you

Jennie ruffled her wet locks as she walked into her bedroom, releasing a loud sigh as she dropped onto her bed and crawled towards her pillows before she stuffed her face into the soft material.

Rolling her head, Jennie stared at her own beside table and felt her heart skip a beat at the familiar photo of her and Lisa staring back at her. Reaching out towards the photo, she hesitated for a moment before finally pulling the frame towards her.

Moving onto her back, Jennie stared up at the picture and felt tears gathering in her eyes as she felt the familiar ache settle in her heart as she thought about her wife; she didn't think she'd ever stop missing Lisa.

"God, I miss you," Jennie sniffled as she bit at her lower lip for a long moment. "I'm trying my best with him, I hope you know that. It's not easy. I didn't exactly ever picture myself doing this whole single mom thing."

The silence in the room caused the tears to come faster as she sat up and pulled her knees to her chest, the frame resting on knee as she stared down at her smiling wife who stared back at her with unblinking eyes.

"He's such a good kid, Lis. I hope you can see him, see how amazing he is." Jennie sighed with a shake of her head. "I'm not sure how we've made it this far, to be honest. Life just isn't the same without you."

Jennie could picture Lisa's expression, that little raise of her eyebrow and that amused expression; she could see Lisa smiling at her and pressing a kiss to her head, giving her the silent encouragement she needed.

"I-I am seeing someone. Well, I might be." Jennie frowned, folding her brow into a scowl before clearing her throat. "I like her, and she likes me. A lot. And she's a good person, she's really good with Curtis. You'd like her."

Jisoo was perfect, a perfection Jennie hadn't seen in three years. She was sweet and she was so careful with Curtis and Jennie, always being careful not to cross lines that she knew was drawn concerning Lisa.

She made Jennie happy and Jennie knew her son could see that, she knew that Curtis liked that about her. It had taken him some time, but he had warmed up to Jisoo and was now deciding he was ready to let his mother move on.

"I just miss you like crazy," Jennie sighed as she rolled over to return the picture to the bedside table, her eyes darting over the photo as she licked her hips. "I love you, Lili. I wish you were here, baby."
