"It smells like Momma." Curtis whispered as he reached in for a t-shirt, Jennie watching with a sad smile as the little boy continued to pull out thing after thing till he had a small pile. "I want to keep all of them, Mommy."
"I see that, baby." Jennie sighed. "How about you pick just one?"
Curtis scowled as he glanced towards his pile of clothes before locking his brown eyes back with his mother's, "I-I don't want to. I need new ones for when the smell runs out of the other ones, Mommy."
"Baby..."
"Please, Mommy?" Curtis murmured.
Jennie swallowed hard before nodding her head, Curtis smiling softly at how easy it was to get her to cave before he curled his arms around the pile of clothes and buried his face in the array of materials.
"Smells like vanilla." Curtis grumbled into the clothes.
Jennie watched adoringly as Curtis buried himself into the familiar smell leaving her to stare at the little boy who reminded her so much of the woman she had lost; sometimes, when she looked at him, she swore her wife wasn't gone.
She knew Lisa lived on through their son, the little boy was a mini version of her. He was everything that she had been and it caused Jennie's heart to flutter every time she looked into his brown eyes.
"Hey, are you getting hungry?" Jennie asked as she stood from the bed, Curtis' head popping up from beneath his pile of clothing as he eagerly nodded his head. "How about I go order us some dinner? We'll eat and watch a movie."
"Can we watch Avengers?"
"We've watched it every day this week, kid," Jennie whined with a roll of her eyes, the woman shaking her head as the little boy simply tilted his head at her. "Fine, fine. Go put those clothes in your room and then we'll decide what to order."
Jennie watched as Curtis struggled to cradle the t-shirt pile in his arms before he rushed from the room, the jacket hanging over his body awkwardly as he fumbled away leaving Jennie to struggle through the tears burning at her eyes.
Turning back towards the box, Jennie stared down at the few articles of clothing that Curtis had left behind causing her to suck in a breath before she hesitated for a moment and closed the box, setting it in the corner of the closet.
He smiles that little crooked smile
There's no denying he's your child
Without him, I don't know what I'd do
He gets that from you
Oh, he gets that from you
"Bud, I am not having this debate with you," Jennie scoffed as she pressed her hands to the counter and watched as Curtis narrowed her eyes at her. "It's not even that big of a choice! It's either Chinese or Thai!"
"I want pizza." Curtis pouted.
"We had pizza on Thursday night, let's try something different," Jennie offered as she held up two take out menus. "Come on, you love eggrolls! And you get a fortune cookie if you get Chinese. Dinner and dessert."
"I still want pizza." Curtis shrugged as he folded his arms on the counter before resting his chin on them as he stared at his scowling mother. "How about you get Chinese and I get my own yummy cheesy barbecue pizza?"
"You're going to become a pizza if you're not careful." Jennie warned with a roll of her eyes before throwing her hands up, the woman releasing a loud sigh. "You win. I'll get you your stinking pizza."
