Lui's Story

The young boy sobbed as the sound of yelling filled his ears. He muffled his own sounds through a soft, light brown blanket he often slept with out of fear that he would be heard.

It had been like this for the past week: his mom would come home drunk after work with clear signs that she had been less than faithful to her husband and he would call her out on it. They both knew they were getting a divorce sooner or later, but they never seemed to touch on that subject. Lui knew they didn't love each other like they used to, but it still hurt to hear them screaming insults at one another. It was always the same kind of insults that were always aimed at each other. However, there was a single sentence that his mother screamed that silenced everything in the house.

"IF WE DIDN'T HAVE THAT DAMNED KID, MAYBE YOU WOULDN'T ACT LIKE SUCH A *hic* BITCH!" He stopped breathing for a moment, all color drained from his face. Lui didn't bother listening anymore. The only thing he could hear was his mother's drunken voice wildly exclaiming how, in Lui's mind, he fucked everything up. It kept repeating in his mind until he couldn't take it.

He looked around his room, frantically searching for a way out, and saw his window sitting right next to his bed. He unlocked it clumsily, wanting to get out of the house and not being in a good state of mind, and dropped out of his window. His room was a floor above the ground, but he didn't break any bones, chose not to acknowledge the slight limp caused by his leg, and started running. He wouldn't stop-- he couldn't stop. The only thing going through his mind was that he needed to get away from his house. Lui wasn't quite sure what his reasoning was; however, when he thought about it, his thoughts came to one thing: it's all his fault.

After a while, he finally decided to listen to the wailing of his legs and sat down behind a dumpster. He'd stay there until his legs could run again and then go. He tried focusing on anything other than the statement that started all of this. He wasn't quite sure if it was possible to focus on anything else. It just continued to play over and over in his mind.

He didn't know how long he sat, forcing himself not to listen to the voice in his head. All he knew was that a white van pulled up near the alleyway he sat in and he was snapped out of his trance. He tried hiding behind the dumpster, suddenly wishing he had never stopped to rest and attempted to quiet his breathing. Lui shut his eyes tightly, but opened them when he felt a strong arm pulling him. He screamed for them to stop, but they covered his mouth with a rag. Quickly, he fell unconscious, his last thoughts being, "Mom, I hope you're happy now."
