Chapter Five

It all felt so anticlimactic. Somehow Dauphine had imagined fireworks, trumpets, doves flying in the air or at least something when she greeted Kale. All this excitement and it seems as though he dreaded her coming here. And he was hiding.

This was Pete's fault! Of course she knew she couldn't really blame him for her disappointment, but she couldn't help thinking that he was the reason Kale wore that bloody hood all the time.

It was annoying. Every time she tried glimpsing his green eyes all she saw were black pools. The shadows cast by his hood prohibited her from seeing him clearly. All she could see was his jaw. O that jaw! She smiled as she walked up the stairs with Alexis towards their rooms. Even though most of his face was covered, that jaw was amazing!

"Dauphine!" she jerked at Alexis' voice. Looking up into her friend's blue eyes. "Sorry, Alexis."

Alexis merely shook her head. She knew Dauphine must be disappointed. Poor girl was looking forward to this since the day she had found out. "It's okay Princess." They came to their suite. Opening the door, Alexis allowed Dauphine to enter first.

Both the girls gasped together at the splendor of the room in front of them. Dauphine's eyes twinkled. "Purple?" she squealed jumping forward onto the silky three-quarter bed. Everything smelled amazing and the duvet and pillows were all so soft. "Alexis, this room is so beautiful!"

Alexis smiled. "Don't get too used to it, Queen-to-be."

Dauphine made a face at Alexis while she moved to open the adjoining door. Before she could though, it opened from the other side. Esme entered the room smiling. She eyed Dauphine, "Having fun?"  Not knowing boundaries, of course, Dauphine jumped up and wrapped her arms around the old woman. "Oh, this is so beautiful! I love purple! Thank you so much!"

Esme hugged her back, a bit shocked. Royalty was usually more reserved when it came to touching. And yet, the Princess' behavior didn't seem too strange, considering her background. Esme had eyed Dauphine since their meeting. The child seemed to be smitten with her King and somehow she seemed relieved. She had seen the young girl trying more than once to sneak a peek inside Kale's hood. Her brown eyes seemed disappointed that her attempts were futile. "I already had all your things packed away while you were having tea, Princess." She turned to Alexis. "Yours too, dear, your room is through there." Alexis smiled. "There was no need, ma'am. But thank you so much."

Dauphine stepped forward, slipping her arm around Alexis' arm. "I heard there was a beach here, an ocean! You think we could go see it?" excitement coated her voice. Esme smiled nodding, "Of course, my dear. I'll have Eduar take you. Would you like to go now?"

Dauphine's smile faded. "Will King Kale be joining us?"

Esme saw the eagerness in the child's eyes. She really seemed to want this; she wanted to get to know her King. "I'm sorry, but the King never leaves the castle anymore."

Dauphine lowered her head. "Oh, okay. We would very much like to go now, please." Esme nodded and quickly left, she couldn't stand the sadness in those brown eyes.

When she was out of sight Alexis closed the door and turned to Dauphine. "I'm sorry Princess," she didn't really know what to say. "Maybe he'll change and come along another time?"

Dauphine nodded, grabbing the satchel that she had been carrying. Alexis excused herself, leaving Dauphine alone.

She walked to the window. The view was amazing and it somewhat lightened her mood. The forest stretched farther than her eye could see and she couldn't wait to explore its depths. She smiled, taking out her flower. She was browsing the market when she saw the florists stall. Of course, Pete had been in too much of a hurry and before she could stop him he had grabbed the poor bud, throwing it inside his satchel.

She held up the small red flower. Placing it in the empty pot that was built into the windowsill. Slowly she moved her hand over it, concentrating on love and life, rather than her own disappointment. Soon there wasn't only one little red bud, but a few dozen. The Amaryllis bulbs almost glowed when she pulled her hand away. She sighed, that was awesome. She was still in shock at her newfound abilities. Before her aunt's revelation, she had used water, fertilizer and pruning to restore plants, now she could revive a plant using only her thoughts. Still admiring her work, she heard the door open. It was Alexis. "Princess, Eduar is ready with our horses."

Kale watched as the Princess walked off on her horse with the other two. Her head was hanging low and she didn't seem to take part in the conversation the other two were having.

Frowning he turned away from the window and back to his room. He fell into a chair and just stared in front of him. He needed to end this. Rather now than later. He didn't want anyone to get attached to each other and then when it did end, it would end in heartbreak.

But as he told himself this, his mind seemed to wander towards another scenario. One where he married the Princess. He shook his head. She had been so innocent when they had greeted. She was shy and her beautiful cheeks were red. Of course he knew he couldn't read too much into it. She probably had the typical Prince Charming expectations, but she didn't know what he really looked like.

A knock sounded at his door and as he stood to answer it just opened, revealing a smiling Esme. "My King!" She seemed excited, it was already happening, Esme was getting attached. Instead of asking her why she seemed excited he asked, "Where is Eduar and the two girls going?"

Esme, still smiling, simply answered. "The beach."

Kale nodded. Of course, Sanko didn't have a beach, or a forest, they probably wanted to explore the whole kingdom. Esme cleared her throat. "Your majesty, Dauphine had asked that you accompany her to the beach. Of course I said no since you obviously don't want to spend any time with her."

Kale turned to face Esme, she was wrong. He wanted to. He wanted to know her. Dauphine was so much more than he could remember. She was beautiful, too beautiful for someone like him.

When Kale didn't say anything, Esme decided to go on speaking. She very much wanted her King to be happy, and she believed Dauphine could do that, only if he opened up to her. It wouldn't be hard, Dauphine was warm and she wanted to know him. "You know she's in love with you. Her eyes sparkle every time she mentions your name."

Kale shook his head, frowning. How he wanted that to be true. "She isn't, Esme. She has romanticized our meeting since she was young. She's not in love with me."

Kale watched as Emse left, closing the door behind her. This was just a mess. He didn't know how to feel or act. He couldn't tell the truth or intentions from Dauphine. He sighed. He could find out, but that required him to spend time with her and he didn't want to risk anything. What was wrong with him! Kale turned to leave his room. A few hours ago he was dead sure he wanted to get to know these people! And that's what he was going to do.
