The doors to the emergency room burst  open.

Two beds were being rushed to the operating room.

The ambulance's siren could be heard in the background.

The nurses were frantic, hoping and praying, just like on any other of their emergencies, that this time their patients will live. All they could do right now was to try and keep them alive.

---

The Ramirez's neighbors hurried into the hospital with little Scarlett trailing behind them, clutching her teddy bear, oblivious to what was happening.

Ako si Mrs. Santos, kaibigan ako nung mga naaksidente. Asan na ba sila? They stopped at the nurse's station to ask some questions, but were directed to sit and wait.

Scarlett saw the worried faces of  her neighbors and got scared. What was happening?

Tita, what are we doing here po? Asan po sina Mama at Papa?

Wait lang muna tayo dito ha? and a hug was the only reply she got.

They waited for several minutes until a doctor came out to talk to her tito and tita. The doctor removed his gloves and shook his head.

The only thing Scarlett heard was "I'm sorry."

Mrs. Santos covered her mouth to prevent herself from crying out loud. She tried to hold her tears, but they just flowed out. Mr. Santos put a comforting arm around her. They both couldn't believe this was happening.

They looked at Scarlett, so innocent and young. How can they break this news to  her?

Mrs. Santos came up to Scarlett and held her small hands inside hers. Seeing her tita cry, filled her own eyes with tears. Her heart was pounding. She was getting more scared by the minute. She knew something was wrong.

Tita, what's wrong po ba? She said in a soft voice.

Scarlett, anak... your parents we're in a car accident...

Napalunok si Scarlett and a tear fell from her eyes. She was breathing hard. Mrs. Santos's hold on her hand became tighter.

Wala na sila...anak, I'm so sorry pero wala na ang Mama at Papa mo...

As if a faucet opened, tears just spilled out of Scarlett's eyes. Her worst fears have come true. There was nothing Mr. and Mrs. Santoscould do, but hug her.

---

It was a quiet trip back to the Santos's home.

It was still raining. Scarlett was staring out the car window hugging her teddy bear. The teddy bear was one of her parent's gifts for her for her birthday.

Tears still threatened to fall from her eyes. But whenever they did, Scarlett just wiped them off. She told herself she needed to be strong. She was a big girl. She needed to show them that. Now she didn't know what was going to happen to her, she didn't want to be a burden.
