Malakai

[ Freshmen Orientation]

The school was nice but it was nothing much new to me. I've been here so many times when my brothers still came.

The only difference now is the classrooms. Some where larger than others. New faces and ones I couldn't forget. Some New buildings.

"Kai!"

I turned away from my group and saw Callie with the sweetest smile on her face.

"How are you?" She reaches over for a hug "how was your summer?"

"It was good. We went to France to visit my brother. How was yours?"

"It was great, I cruised around here, hung out with some people." she said with a wide smile

"Hey Kai," my best friend West put his around my shoulder pulling me down before letting go and hugging Callie. Then came some of our other friends.

"Let's go get our books."

We all went together in line and talked about our summers.

"I worked on my game & my dad bought another quad, so went to Pismo for a couple of days." West said

"We should all go camping! It would be fun"

"Callie are you sure you want to? You can't even sit on a chair without wiping it down"

"Well. Well now I can, I went camping at Mammoth for two days and it surprisingly wasn't bad."

"Was it an actual tent or a cabin because they're two different things Cal"

"West itt was a tent and if camping in the woods wasn't all bad, what makes the beach any worse"

"Okay then"

West was a little a lot more straight forward. When Callie said she wanted to camp, I hadn't believed her either but I wasn't going to say anything.

I heard a lot of laughter. I turned around and saw a few girls I went to middle school with but one of them was different.

She looked so familiar but I knew I hadn't gone to middle school with. As she got in line, I gazed at her.

She was tall and gorgeous. Her perfectly long straight hair ran through her shoulders. She worse ripped skinny jeans, a pink top and plan black vans.

She had the biggest smile but you can tell she was a bit shy. She seemed comfortable with her friends around her but she looked a little lost or discomfort.

"Hey West," I said tapping him on the shoulder "who's that over there?" I asked and pointed at her

She was a few people down the line from us but I don't think she noticed my gaze or that I pointed at her.

We all turned around and we all stared for a few seconds.

"Kai that's Hirsch., Zo Hirsch. Remember Zo, we played league with her since 1st grade through 6th grade."

"Yeaa, I remember her now."

She was different from how I remembered her.

"She went to state champs at her old school but she's back here." Callie said

"How do you know that?" I asked

"My parents mentioned they moved back during dinner last night. They live in Ridge Moore now."

"Sweet. Now i can work on my game." West said with a smirk on his face

"Get over self Randolph"

Callie always had something for West but West was just too blind to even notice her

"I'm kidding but I wanna see her game."

I turned around and made eye contact with Hailey. I turned back around as soon as she noticed.

"They're coming," Callie said

"Hey guys!" Hailey said and everyone greeted each other

"Do you guys mind if we tag along?" Hailey asked

"No we don't mind," West respond before I could "Hey Zo, see that you're back."

"Hi West"

Her voice was the balance of calm and powerful. You can feel the smile in her words. She was soothing.

"How come you came back?"

I punched West on the shoulder. He shouldn't just ask like that.

"I'm just asking." He whispered

"My sister got accepted to college around here and this is a really good school."

She wasn't wrong. We were going to a good school.

"So you're playing basketball here?" Callie asked

"Yea I am. I've been practicing with their Varsity since I got back. They're really good."

"I heard you live in Ridge Moore. I live there too."

I could tell by the way West looks at her, he likes her too.

"Yea" was all she said

"What street do you live on?"

"I live on Seyfried"

"You live two block from me. I live on Lemon."

"Oh that's cool."

"Yea, we should kick it at the gym sometimes."

"Yea I wouldn't mind that."

She went back talking to the girls & so did Callie. Callie was on the varsity team for softball. She's probably the sweetest one.

"Bro, she's bomb." West turned around to me and had his hand out to dab me up

"What are you gonna do about it?"

"I don't know but I like it,"

"Dick chill,"

"She's gonna want this one day,"

"Take a chill West,"

Looking at her and just listen to her laugh. I remember how I felt before she left. I had a small crush on her, but I couldn't build up the courage to tell her. I was too late, she was gone.

I had told West about it and West told me I was going to be alright because she wasn't pretty or interesting. All that she was good at was her game in basketball.

I don't think West remembers what he had said to me all those years ago. Now he wants her, what can I do.
