Barking Up The Wrong Tree

Prologue

"Come on, Addie!" Nadia pushed as she spoke in hushed tones. Waving her arms forward like a madman, she urged Adaline forward. "Come on, scared-ie cat!"

"I don't think this will end well." Addie responded more talking to herself than to her best friend.

Adaline Auston had made friends with Nadia her first day with her new pack. After Alpha Baynes took over her pack and disposed of her father, he brought her back to his pack. Instantly she was put into a home with a childless couple in the pack. Adaline at first despised her foster family but soon grew to love them. Honestly, they, the Hamilton's, were the first vision of what a true family should be like.

Sarah and Miles Hamilton were loving, but firm, which she, Addie, soon came to appreciate. But unfortunately, not soon enough.

"Stop being such a worry wart, Addie! We'll just borrow it and bring it back later." Nadia had always been a risk taker, pushing the limits to the max each and every time she could. Her devilish grin was in frequent use on her face.

"But do you really have to take that one? That's Blain's work truck! You are aware that he is best friends with the Alpha, right?" Adaline whined as she peered into the vacant SUV.

"Yep." She popped the 'p' as she continued to snicker as the door picking was successful. "And I also know that the Omega just took over this company. Any more useless information you want to quiz me on, oh-wise-one?"

"If we get caught, I'm totally blaming you! I'll tell them you threatened me." Adaline added as she was shoved in the passenger seat of the large, expensive, black SUV.

"Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say. They'll have to catch us first." With that her head dipped under the steering wheel as she began to hot wire the car. Seconds later the motor purred to life and Nadia sat up with her signature grin as she popped the truck into gear and began to drive out of the lot with the headlights off, to avoid any detection.

"See, nothing to it!" Nadia spoke too soon as bright lights began flashing behind them.

"Nothing to it, huh? Just pull over!" Adaline screamed as she clung to the overhead handle and the arm rest, her nailed embedding themselves deep into it. Luckily she was smart and put her seat belt on because not even a moment later the ride became much more bumpy.

"Nah, we can lose them." Nadia assured her as she weaved through the country roads and fields. At that moment Adaline knew her best friend had officially lost it and was on the verge of losing everything as in horror she noticed Nadia had never fastened her seat belt. The belt was now resting lightly around her neck and shoulder.

A pack police car swerved knocking into them sending them spiraling out of control. Adaline's screams fell on deaf ears as she clung to the truck for dear life. Horror struck she watched her friend losing the battle to regain control of the truck. The early morning dew had slicked the grass sending the truck barreling toward a large, thick tree. Before her next breath, Adaline's body was jerked about and darkness over took her.
