I was sitting on the couch, reading a book from my favorite collection of novels. I was 9 months pregnant and it was today that the doctors had said that I would give birth to my child.
I was hungry all of a sudden, so I got up to go get a light snack, and that's when I felt it, and gasped, grasping the counter, panting. Contractions... I thought. "Okay, gotta start timing them. " I said to myself. Just then, another one came, but it was a bit sooner than I expected, then, I felt something all too familiar. There was a slight dribble of wetness trickling down my sweat pants. "Oh-no... " my eyes went wide, but I snapped myself out of it. Get it together Takashi... okay, I need to call Keith and let him know it's time.
I grabbed my phone, settling down into the birthing area we had set up after slipping off my pants and boxers. I speed dialed Keith's phone, with him picking up immediately. "Hello, " came his smooth voice. "Hey there hon, " I answered, getting onto my back, spreading my legs as far as I could, still holding the phone to my ear. "Hey what's wrong, why are you panting? " Keith asked, concern laced in his voice. "Keith, don't panic okay, because I need you now more than ever... " "Okay... " I heard him answer a bit more calmly this time. "I've just gone into labor, I didn't expect it to be this early, but it is, now I need you to call the paramedics so that if I give birth and your not here, I'll still have the support that I need. " "Okay, understood, baby, please don't tear yourself. " Keith warned. I chuckled, wincing from yet another painful contraction. "I won't... "
As I hung up, I reached down to see if my cervix had opened up enough, and truth be told, it had been opening up from the time I was in the kitchen to the time I hung up and now I was ready to push. So, I waited for the next contraction, took a deep breath, and pushed, hard, squeezing my eyes shut, gritting my teeth and finally at the peak of the contraction, shouted in pain. I repeated this several times, having to stop to catch my breath and because I was getting dizzy.
I've gotta try a new position... I thought to myself, my vision finally clearing. So I got onto my knees and spread my legs, readying myself. The contraction came and I bored down. Panting, I reached down and checked myself, gasping at what I felt. My hand pressed against a soft surface. "My baby... " That sparked a whole new determination in me. My baby was right here, even though it was gonna be extremely painful, it would all be worth it once I'm holding my baby.
I breathed and waited as the next contraction came and this time, I pushed even harder, keeping my hand on my baby's head tracking my own progress. Tears streamed down my face as I bit my lip, holding back a scream. At the end of the contraction, I let out a loud grunt, feeling a bit light headed as my vision went blurry again. Don't pass out, my baby needs me.
As my vision cleared again, I readied myself for the final push that would give life to my baby girl. The contraction came, and with this one, I put all my remaining strength into it, my legs shaking. My bottom half felt as if it were on fire. As I looked down in between my legs, I saw my baby's body would fall to the floor. So, I reached down in between my legs, took my baby, and pulled. I screamed from the pain, but then all of a sudden, a beautiful sound peirced the air, as I birthed the rest of my child. "Awaaah, awaaah, awaaah..." "Hey, " I said as I pulled the wailing infant close, collapsing against the pillows and blankets that had been set up. I had done it. I had given birth to our baby girl. The baby continued to cry as I picked up my cell phone and called my husband. He picked up immediately. "Shiro, are you okay?! " "Yes, yes I'm okay, listen... " I said, holding my phone next to the wailing infant as I gently rubbed her little back. Placing the phone back up to my ear, I heard the pride in my husband's voice. "I'm so proud of you Shiro. You did it. " "That I did" I whispered, barely audible. "Shiro, are you sure your okay?" Keith asked, his voice starting to waver. "I'm fine Keith, huh, " I looked to the side to see the paramedics walking in with a female doctor. "Speaking of fine, the paramedics just got here, so you don't have to worry, I'm in good hands. " I said as I assured him I was okay and hung up, letting the doctor do her job, giving the baby her shots and helping me get cleaned up since I had spent all of my energy giving birth to my child that was now squirming against my chest.
