Love was never easy for Mia Malenko. In the total 23 years of her life, she had had 3 relationships. And one of them was from kindergarten. She found herself regularly immersed in the cliche romance novels, staring at the couples walking by hand in hand on the sidewalk, and even the love her parents shared.
She was disgusted. Not by love, but by herself. She knew she looked desperate, even to the naked eye, but as much as she tried to hide it with confidence, her insecurities poured out with almost every sentence she said regarding this topic.
Was she not pretty enough? Was she too annoying? What was it that people saw in her that made her repulsive? These kinds of thoughts plagued Mia's mind ever since she was a teenager. She couldn't voice them out to anyone either. Why? Because it was silly. How could she admit that she needed validation? Especially from a relationship?
She tried dating apps and whatnot until she finally found a girl that seemed to accept her for who she was, but with Mia's luck, the girl moved away, and Mia couldn't even think of long-distance. However, she didn't pout, she kept her profile up on the dating apps and kept going with life. After this relationship, she started to stop dwelling on the concept of love and started thinking about her career.
In two years' time, her career was just the same. She had gone to seminars, earned new certificates, and applied for more jobs, but it all seemed like a waste of time, because, in the end, Mia was still stuck in the same company she was two years ago. She had risen in the ranks, but at the end of the day, she wasn't where she wanted to be and that was frustrating.
Her mother's constant praise didn't help either. All she ever said was "You just have to wait for the correct time, and it will all unfold in front of you" or variations of that. And when it got particularly hard for Mia to keep herself moving her mother would say "You know there are always spots open in my company".
Her mother's company. Absolute Cupid. The matchmaking service that was known through all of Canada as the true form of Cupid. Her mother was successful, to say the least. Ever since she was young, her father would take care of her while her mother worked in either her office at HQ or at home.
Being the founder of a company was a big enough job, but being the founder of this company was a whole different scenario. She had some kind of involvement in every single match made, and for the VIP ones, she had to do all of it.
Mia never blamed her for not being in her childhood though. How could she? Her mother was doing what she loved and quite frankly, Mia was proud of her. It's not like she was a completely absentee mother anyway. She loved her family.
As much as she loved her family, it was no match for the passion she had for her job. Doing what you love for the rest of your life? That's success. The term "burnout" wasn't unknown to her, yet it didn't deter her from working day and night.
At age 50, she was nestled in her office, pulling one too many all-nighters. To be completely honest, it wasn't hard work anymore. It became a sort of obsession. One thing led to another, and soon her mom was in a hospital bed, uttering her last words.
"Do good, Mia. Go far, I know you can"
