(This is just a draft. It may be changed later)
I wake up out of bed. I tear the sheets and blankets off of me. My vision is still blurry. I pull my hands up to my face to wipe them in an attempt to make my vision more clear. I feel as if everything is okay until I look on the right side of me, where my wife used to sleep. It's empty and I feel the hole in my chest get larger. I try to forget the pain I feel and the constant memories I see flashing through my head. It won't stop, it's like you're watching a movie and you lost the remote. I walk to the bathroom and look in the mirror. My hair is a dark mess. My face has stubble from not shaving in a week. I look up and swear I see her. Her smile is bright. Her hair is golden like the sun. Her eyes are as blue as the sea and her skin as pale as snow. I close my eyes and shake the image away. I open my eyes to see it's gone.
At this moment I heard my phone ring. I walked back to my bed and picked the phone up off of the nightstand. The caller ID said: John's Work. Then I remember that I haven't been to work since Sarah's death. I take a deep breath and click the green button. "Hello John, it's Mickey. I'm calling to see if you're coming to work today? I heard about Sarah. I'm terribly sorry for your loss. There's no pressure to come in. We don't have many cases so you can take as much time as you need. We hope to see you soon." His voice sounded pitiful. That was the tone of voice I heard now. No more enthusiastic, no more happy tones, only pitiful. "John, are you there?" I was so deep in my thoughts I forgot I was on the phone. "Yeah, I'm here. I think I'll try to come in today." "Really? You know there's no pressure." His voice was a little less pitiful. "Yeah, I'm sure. I'm getting ready now so I'll see you around 8:00." "Okay, that sounds good. I'll see you then." I looked up at my clock. It read 6:45 a.m. I had plenty of time.
I walked back to the bathroom. Took a hot shower, shaved, got dressed and ready for work. I grabbed my briefcase off of the kitchen table. I already had my keys so I walked towards the front door. I locked it and shut it. The drive to work was quiet. I turned on the radio. It played some hip-hop music. I switched it to the news station. "Breaking news, the police are now ruling Sarah Whitaker's death as a homicide. New findings show that the woman was brutally murdered. I stopped the car. This whole time I thought Sarah committed suicide. I began to smile knowing she didn't kill herself. Not long after I frowned again, she was still dead nonetheless.
I closed my eyes until I heard a sudden honking. I realized I was driving and looked up at my rear view mirror to see Sarah. She was smiling again. I couldn't look at her again so I stared at my steering wheel. This time she spoke, "John." She drew my name out like she was singing a note. " Why didn't you save me?" "I did, Sarah. I tried to save you." "Why did this happen to me?" "I don't know but I swear I will revenge you." I heard honking again. I looked up at the rearview mirror again. She smiled a devilish smile, then she disappeared.
I have seen her often but, she always asked me questions I couldn't answer. I finished my drive to work where I was greeted by Mickey at the entrance. "It's nice to see you, John. It's been a while since I last seen you. How are you holding up?" "I've been okay." We walked into the law firm and went our separate ways. "John, if you need anything just tell me and I'll do my best." "All right, thank you, Mickey." I opened the door to my office. I steered my head away from the countless pictures. I walked to my desk and remembered what I promised Sarah. I logged into my computer and began doing research. Later on, around lunchtime Mickey came into my office. "Would you like to go grab a bite to eat?" "No thank you. I'm alright." His smile broke into a slight frown as he said, "Are you sure?" "I'm sure. I got a lot of work to do on a personal project I've been working on." "Oh. All right. I'll leave you to it then." With that being said, he shut the door and left. I had no time to waste, I can't break my promise to Sarah. After a short period of time I began to see images of Sarah running through my head. Not normal images. They were of her mutilated corpse. I had been seeing those a lot when I'm reminded of her.
After work was over around 8:00 p.m. I shut down the computer. I finally figured everything out. I got in my car and went home. I knew what I had to do. It all made sense. When I arrived home I walked to the bathroom. I looked in the mirror. I smiled, "I know what happened Sarah. I found the murderer. Now I can revenge you." Her image appeared in the mirror. She was smiling. I was the murderer. I killed my wife. This all made so much sense. That's why I can't live with myself.
"Breaking news report. The body of John Whitaker was found dead in the floor of his bathroom. Officials are ruling it as a suicide due to many mental illnesses and loss of his wife. Police also captured the murderer of Sarah Whitaker, his wife. Charles Goodman was arrested for the murder of Sarah Whitaker. Thank you all for listening. Have a Happy Halloween and be safe. Many dangers can be lurking in the dark."
