Making it to the safe zone was one of the more difficult things either Zion or Eugene has ever done. Making it through zombie infested cities and keeping each other safe. They had lost many friends along the way, but they managed to survive long enough to reach the old factory that the survivors had taken over as their new safe zone.
When they reached the door of the safe zone a taller man with muscles and many tattoos pulled them inside. They were forced inside a dark room and they heard chains rattling. They chains were holding back some of the zombies.
"I thought this was a safe zone." Eugene remarked under his breath.
"This is a safe zone. These are the ones who have fallen. We keep them here in case any other survivors have plans of attacking us." The man said in a gruff tone of voice.
"Can we stay here? We've risked everything." Zion asked.
"That's up to the first survivors. The ones that established this safe zone." He said.
"Can you take us to them?" Eugene asked. He was being so polite, he didn't want to mess up this opportunity.
"Walk this way. Stay close." The man instructed. They began walking towards the center of the warehouse.
In the center the warehouse they saw many other survivors. They all seemed to be working.
The tall man walked them up to the top floor. Zion and Eugene followed close behind. Zion kept a close eye on Eugene as if he was a small child. Zion knew that they needed to be on their best behavior if they wanted to stay.
"In there." The man stopped at a door with a disgusting glass window.
Zion and Eugene took a few deep breaths before entering through the door. Inside they found an older man with grey hair and a younger woman about their age. The girl was missing her left arm.
"Who are you?" She asked rather quickly. It was almost in an accusing tone of voice.
"Be nice darling." The old man chuckled. "Let's hear them out."
"I'm Zion. This is Eugene. We've traveled from a school about six miles from here. Our friends were killed after an invasion. We heard about this safe zone and we were hoping we'd be able to stay here." Zion said.
"How long have you been hiding?" The girls tone softened.
"The epidemic hit our town about 3 months ago. We've been hiding at the school for 2 months." Zion explained.
"And you've had enough supplies to survive?" She continued.
"Yeah. We made it work. So can we stay?" Eugene finally stepped in.
"As long as you guys aren't infected." She answered.
"Check them." The old man said to two shorter guys.
They removed Zion and Eugene's coats. Right away one of them gasped. Eugene looked down. His white t shirt was now red with blood. He removed his shirt and revealed a deep wound stretching across his chest.
"He's infected!" The girl yelled. Immediately a swarm of people came in and grabbed Eugene.
