She raised her hands and allowed the creation of a new child. That treacherous Death kept harming her beautiful creations. The fireflies surrounding her glowed brighter due to her magic.
"See, little artist," she told her successor. "Our masterpieces thrive on our magic, our greatness, our gift." The tanned boy looked at her in awe. "And when my gift is fully passed to you, you will be exposed to the purest and most perfect gift of all."
"But what of death and their Magics?" The little artist had asked her, her, about death.
"Death is cruel and harsh, they wish to destroy our perfect painting." She growled. The animals, plants, children, anything and everything. Death would ruin it and see them destroyed, so that life had to make more.
If only death didn't exist, then her painting would be perfect.
Her power had been draining more and more lately, meaning her apprentice was ready to take the transferral ritual.
It had happened swiftly, Death and her had gone to their sides of the tree and handed their successors a fruit of Life's choosing, this time as an apple, that was filled with their chosen magic.
Once the little artist bit into his apple, Life had screamed in pain as memories of a time where she wasn't the all beloved life had rushed into her head. She fell to her knees as the memories sorted themselves.
A woman wearing grey had walked over, tears in her eyes. "Lily?" She whispered to Life- no Lily.
"Samantha? Wh-where's Dede?" The younger of the two started to cry and pointed over to where Death's-no Delilah's successor and her other niece were holding a ragged cloak and crying. "Wha-what? N-no... w-we don't die... we're supposed to go back to live our lives..."
"Lily, deaths always die after the ritual." She whimpered. "My daughter will too- do to a Life's abuse. As did Dede to- to yours." Samantha fell to her knees, placing a hand on Lily's shoulder. "It-it wasn't your fault. Y-you just didn't remember, okay?"
No, Lily wanted to scream. No it's not okay.
And it never will be.
