My mother shoved me in the bushes of the raunchiest smelling bush I knew.
“Mama?!” I cried.
“Shush baby. Stay here and no matter what do not move or make a sound. Got it?” She sternly said.
I nodded my head utterly confused and frightened. We were walking in the forest when a howl broke the silence of the forest. My mother had run even though it was far away. I ran with her my still short legs hardly keeping up and that’s when she shoved me in the bush.
“I love you baby don’t you ever forget that” she kissed my head and retreated backwards.
“I love you too” I whispered.
My mother put her finger to her lips in silence. Her body was trembling and her eyes held so much fear. They were like saucers in her pale face. Her black hair swished as the wind blew around her. She took another step back. A howl came again, only closer. A whimper escaped my lips. My mother turned her head ever so slightly towards me and shook her head. She wasn’t looking at me which frightened me even more. She was looking into the dark woods. The crickets buzzed around and the moon lit the little clearing my mom was standing in. the way the rays bounced off her hair made me want to run and touch them. As if I was going to catch the light and keep it. Suddenly the ground shook. Not like an earth quake, but you could tell that something big was coming. I covered my mouth with my hands. I was shaking from the cold and from the fear radiating off my mother.
I heard a growl coming from a bush nearby. My mother screamed and tried to run. But before she could even turn around, a wolf leaped out of the bushes and onto her. His paws took her down easily and his teeth went for her neck. He was a big wolf, bigger than any I’ve seen in zoos. I almost screamed but I remembered my mother’s warning. I watched as the wolf bit into her neck blood squirting into and out of his mouth. His fur was coated with a thick layer. My mother’s last scream was gargled with blood spitting from her mouth. She took the opportunity to glance my way, we made eye contact and my heart broke. Tears streamed down my face. I saw her mouth move. I read her lips perfectly ‘I love you baby’.
Her body stilled and her eyes stayed open, still in contact with mine. My heart was beating like an unsteady drum and it hurt to breath. It felt as of something was constricting it. My chest was tight and it took all my energy not to wheeze loudly.
The wolf dropped my now dead mother and threw his head back in a satisfied howl. I shuddered, and all I wanted to do was crawl into my mother and tell her to come back, to come back to daddy and I.
As I waited, I observed the wolves. The pain of my mother was numbing me so I found something to distract me. The wolves were significantly bigger. There were three of them but it was obvious who the boss was. They had golden eyes, which seemed impossible. I heard men talking to the right of me. Maybe they can help me! I went to move but I stopped as I watched the man’s bones shift and turned himself into a wolf. Shock hit my system. No, impossible. They were fiction. But I really knew the answer. The killers to my mother’s death were werewolves.
~8 years later~
“Beep!” I jolted out of my haze as the timer went off in art class.
“Alright everyone, art utensils down! Let’s see who our winner is for this week’s art challenge!” My teacher grinned, and clapping her hands as if she was a sixteen year old again.
I rolled my eyes at her excitement. Art was my favourite class. I was good, I admit that. But I usually stuck to the back of the room so no one can see my art. I’m not a show off and I’m far from being popular. Since art was well, art we started having challenges where you use the whole week to create something and you challenge everyone in class. I sighed as one by one everyone showed their paintings. Some weren’t bad but others were just plain sad. Some did the basics, flowers, and fruit while others drew things that were a bit more challenging like animals, and sceneries. I myself opted for something different. My name was then being called.
