In today's lesson, let's check out some weirdos of the waterbird world!

American Bitterns master camouflage through plumage and posture: when startled, they freeze and hold their streaked neck vertically to become identical to marsh reeds. Bitterns employ this strategy regardless of location, becoming comically ineffective when they are caught out in the open, such as in the middle of a suburban lawn.

The Anhinga is an aquatic bird that uses its sharp beak to spear fish. While swimming, it has a tendency to keep its body submerged and only reveals its long, snakelike neck above the surface, earning this species the colloquial name of Snakebird.

The Magnificent Frigatebird, sometimes called Man-of-War bird, is a fierce seabird probably best known for the male's comically large red throat pouch, which is inflated like a balloon and proudly displayed to attract females.
