As I woke, I heard yelling from the kitchen. “Lilith! Get out of bed right now! If you miss the bus, you’re grounded!” Mother screamed. Ugh. I hate this. Every morning I get yelled at. “I’m up!” I shouted back as I dragged myself out of bed. I quickly put on my red flannel, black jeans, and red sneakers.
I slid down the rail of the stairs and swung around the corner into the bathroom. I raced to comb my raven hair and brush my teeth. Then I was out the door. I don’t want to confront my mother anymore. Thankfully, father was too hung over to get up today.
The sky was a beautiful peach color as the sun finally decided to show. I sighed, “ hopefully today will be good.” Soon the bus rolls up and I climb aboard. I trudged to my seat and sink down in it. This day better be good.
After about an hour, I was finally at the high school. I step off the bus and examine the many people around me. Where is he? Wait. There! I excitedly trot over to my best friend, David. He’s the sweetest guy here and one of my only friends. I skip to him and hit his arm. “Miss me?” I question sweetly. He gasps and hugs me tightly.
“Of course, my a million dollar jewel! How long have you been out of the hospital?" He says cheerfully. “Ugh, I told you not to call me that you dullard, and I’ve been out for a few days. I just stayed home to cover things up.” I whispered under my breath.
He takes my hand, leading me away from his friends. He looks at me with a sullen look, “Is there a way for you to get out of the house? Just live with a relative?” I smacked my forehead and spoke slightly annoyed, “I told you, my parents never let me meet my relatives, and I wont go to the police because I don’t want to be put up for adoption or some crap like that.”
Just then, the bell rang and everyone starts to head to their class. I grab David’s sleeve as he weasels his way through the crowd. Thankfully David and I have the same first block. We take our seats next to each other and await for the late bell to ring. “Oh crap,” I muttered. Right then, little miss prissy, Wendy, walks into the room with her friends, Tracy and Brittany. She immediately spots David and struts over to him. “Hey cutie,” she flirts, “do you want to come sit with us instead of this demon?”
David smirks and stands. He gently lifts her chin to look at him. “ If Lilith is a demon, then I’m the king of demons. Now I’d like to enjoy my time in hell. Get lost.” He sits back down and gives me a wink. I giggle as Wendy’s face goes bright red with anger. “You stupid hag,” she spits, “what makes you think you can laugh at me? At least I have parents who love me and more than one friend!”
Everyone in the class began to laugh. I went pale and hid my face with my hair. How could someone say that? As I was hiding, David stuck out his foot and tripped Wendy when she was going to her seat. He turns to me and rubs my back. “It’ll be ok, kiddo. I’ll protect you here and we’ll work on protecting you from your parents, ok?” He speaks softly and smiles.
I nod slowly and sigh. I’ll never have a good day. I open my Spanish book and toss David a pencil. He’s never prepared for class, so I know exactly what to do every day. David taps the desk lightly as Mr. Smith goes on and on about useless things. I, however, lean back a little and try to rest my body. Sleeping in class is so great until you eventually get caught.
“Miss Bennett!” Mr. Smith raised his voice, “sleeping in class is against the rules. You will have after school detention again.” He writes me a detention slip as I slowly stretch. Fine Mr. Boring, I’ll sleep in detention. I quickly grabbed my slip and slump back in my seat. “Are you waiting after school again?” I ask David quietly. He smiled slightly and winked, “you bet sugar plum.” He giggled at my angered face. I hate those stupid nicknames.
The bell rang and we bolted down the hall. “Ready, set, go!” David and I split up before the normal student traffic set in. I made it to my second block and took a seat in the back today. I wonder if the guy who normally sits here will be mad. I unpacked my stuff and waited for my answer.
As soon as the late bell rang, the boy casually walked into class. He always reminds me of David. However, many things are different. The boy has black hair with a red streak, and ever so slightly covers his eyes. He walked up to me and smacked his hands on the desk. He flipped his hair out of his eyes, and that is when I realized how handsome he was.
His complexion was very light, his jaw bone sharp, and his eyes popped as if the ocean water was trapped inside. “What are you doing in my seat?”
