Heaven

Most Christians (and some non-Christians) believe that they and other fellow Christians will go to Heaven when they die. I don't think so, and here's why.

The scriptures never actually say Heaven is the destiny of any human being. The word Heaven is used 260 times in the NKJV version of the bible. Unfortunately, we cannot look at all 260 instances, as that would take too long, but we can look at a few controversial ones.

"the kingdom of Heaven"

The kingdom of Heaven only appears in the gospel of Mathew while the other gospels use "the kingdom of God", they both mean the same thing. The kingdom of Heaven is NOT the kingdom IN Heaven, but the kingdom OF Heaven. The word "of" means the "kingdom" has a relation with "Heaven"; thus it could also be translated "The Kingdom relating from or to Heaven".

So how does the kingdom relate to Heaven? Well in Revelations 21:2 it says, "I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of Heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice coming from the throne saying: "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will live with them. They will be his people and God himself will be with them as their God..."

The city in which humans will live comes out of heaven so it makes sense for Jesus to call it the Kingdom of Heaven. "The new Heavens and the new Earth that I make will endure before me," declares the Lord...  -Isaiah 66:22

Yes, you read that correctly. God is going to create a new Heaven (or Heavens) and a new Earth. Just like in the beginning, man is put on the earth, while the angels would likely be in heaven. This is God bringing back a place like the garden of Eden; a perfect place for humans to live.

"Store up for yourselves treasure in heaven"

"Your reward is great in Heaven"

"to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven"

"Our citizenship is in Heaven"

All of these verses make sense when you understand the place for us to live comes from Heaven.

But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. -2 Peter 3:13

The fact of the matter is that Heaven is not our home, but we are destined for a great glorious new earth.
