A loud shriek woke me from my restless slumber, which was quickly followed by the slam of a door. I groaned, slipping out of the warm covers of my bed when I noticed the bottom of my foot was covered in dirt. I dismissed it quickly, ‘I probably got up for a drink last night and don’t remember’, I thought. Scurrying out of bed, I made a bee line for the bathroom before getting ready for my first day of school. Once I was finished I walked back into the girl’s dorm, as Tina was quietly fixed her robes in the corner of the room I once again admired the intricate designs on the walls.
“Tina, what was all that noise about this morning?” I asked, not once looking away from the beautifully designed wall.
“Oh, it seems that Jessica likes to use the shower first,” Tina replied smiling slightly, walking towards the door. “We should probably head to breakfast.”
I silently nodded following Tina out the door and to the Great Hall, the events from last night lingering in the back of my mind. ‘Was it real?’ was the only thing playing over and over in my mind as we walked into the Great Hall and sat down at the Slytherin table before grabbing out schedules for the year.
“Phoenix?” I heard a quiet voice whisper, “Are you okay, you seem distant?”
At this I turned towards Tina giving her a small smile, “Of course I’m fine, I’m a Lestrange” Tina didn’t say anything back to this; she just nodded her head and started eating her breakfast again. Staring at the food in front of me I debated whether I should put some on my plate, deciding against it I just stared at my empty plate as I let my mind wonder.
“Well Hello, I don’t believe I’ve seen you around here before” A voice stated from my right. Lifting my gaze from the empty plate, I stared at the two boys next to me.
The boy closest to me which seemed to be the one who spoke, had dark brown hair that he obviously took great care of in the morning making it look neat and tidy. His light brown eyes stared at me with recognition and respect as he seemed to have realized who I was. The other boy wasn’t quite as neat as his light brown almost blonde hair just sat naturally on his head as his slightly long fringe fell in front of his dark blue eyes. They were both my height, but the second boy seemed to be slightly bigger.
“Well obviously you haven’t seen me before I’m a first year,” I stated as I rolled my eyes at his stupid comment.
“Jason Rosier, second year Slytherin” He stated proudly as most Slytherins did when they introduced themselves. “And this is Robert Avery, also second year Slytherin.” He pointed his finger at his friend.
“Phoenix Lestrange and Tina Prince” I smiled gesturing to myself and Tina. “well this was a lovely chat but we best be going to our first lesson” I smiled before grabbing Tina after making sure she was done and walking out of the Great Hall.
Once we walked into Charms, Professor Flitwick was about to begin the class, without a seconds hesitation I grabbed Tina’s arm and dragged her to an empty seat in the back of the room. As soon as I sat down Professor Flitwick had begun, as it was only the first lesson we did nothing but go over safety instructions. The rest of the day was much the same as the first class, we would introduce ourselves or go through ‘what not to do’ procedures. The only odd thing was the few uncomfortable glances I would get from students and teachers; I would merely smile at them and continue on my way.
“Phoenix?” Tina asked, as she sat across from me on the black leather couch near the roaring fire. Her eyes downcast as she nervously played with the hem of her pleated school skirt.
“Yes Tina?” I said, setting my homework for the day aside.
“Well, you know, well I’ve heard of what your mother has done and I was just curious to know, umm…” she asked quietly but she did not stutter nor did her voice ever cut off, and for this my respect grew for the quiet, shy girl that always seemed to get her words mixed up.
“Everything you have heard about my mother is most likely true,” I stated emotionless as I studied her petite figure that sat across from me on the black couch, “I will not apologize for my mother’s actions as I see no need to do so.”
Tina merely nodded as if she understood the reasons behind my lack of empathy. After that the topic of my mother was never brought up again which I was grateful for as it brought back memories of the horrible dream that I couldn’t quite believe was only a dream. The thought that my mother was ashamed of me hit me hard; it needed to think of a way to contact the dark lord or to at least do something productive until I have some idea what to do.
