darkness

It was the feeling of falling through a dark hole that never ends.

It was like walking into a dark tunnel without anyone by your side.

It was the feeling of calling out for help when there was no one around to save you.

It was like a break up.

Heartache. Is what Dan felt as he trudged home by himself. He wasn't even aware of his own body anymore, or how his feet carried him up the steps.

The hurtful words kept cutting him over and over again as he curls up in a ball on his bed. The sharpened knife of words cuts him much deeper this time and bloods pours out of his body as the salty liquid one calls tears.

"Or better yet. Just leave me alone for the rest of the year."

Dan was a prisoner, and the hateful words formed as guards that kept him cuffed to the bed.

It pained his mother most. Caroline had come home, face bright pink from being outside in the cold but still all smiles as she takes the blanket from Thomas' face.

"Dan? I'm home!" She calls out as she looks around the empty living room. "Dan?"

She takes the steps as baby Thomas coos and giggles in her arms. She reaches his door and pushes it open slightly and gasps. "Bear are you okay?"

Dan just sniffles as his mother comes shuffling over to him and sits on the edge of his bed and uncovers the blanket to see his blotched and wet face. "I don't want to go to school tomorrow." He sniffs.

Thomas wiggles out her arms and crawls up Dan's body instead, talking gibberish as he pulls softly at his curls.

"O-okay sure, but why not?" She grabs his hand and rubs it.
"I...don't feel good."

Caroline put her hand to his forehead. It felt normal but a little warm, but that was because of the fact that he was crying. She knew he wasn't sick, but she wasn't going to push it unless he was ready to tell her.

"Well, just stay up here okay? I'll go get you some cold water."

Dan nods as she gets up and walks out quickly. Forgetting to take Thomas with her.

"You're lucky you're a baby, you don't have to worry about crushes, that's probably why they're called crushes, cause they crush your heart."

Thomas just smiles and gurgles in response as he pats his small hand on his wet cheek. Dan smiles softly.

"Okay I'm back. Sorry I left Thomas in here, has he been bothering you?" She asks as she sits the glass of water down on the bedside and picks him up.

"No, we were just talking."
"He hasn't even said his first words yet but now we're having actual conversations?" She chuckles.

Dan shrugs and sits up a little, rubbing his eyes. Caroline gives him a pitiful look and bends to kiss the top of his head. "Whatever you're going through, it will work out eventually."

He gives a painful smile. "Thanks."

Caroline walks out then with baby Thomas giggling on her hip as she closed the door behind them. Dan sighs and looks out his open curtains to see that the blinds to Phil's room were drawn tight.

He wondered what he was doing. Or if he was even home. His car was still parked in the driveway. Dan's sits up and takes a sip of water. He had to stop thinking about him.

Mrs. Simmons was going to fucking lose it when he came back to school and told her what happened.

Even though Dan didn't think he was ever going back. How could he be in the same school as someone that didn't want to see him or talk to him ever again?

He yawns. He should just sleep. Because you didn't have to worry about your life problems when you slept.
