The second my head began to feel like it was being squeezed between two metal plates, I knew Isaac was trying to communicate with me.
Maybe this was a bad idea... but I needed to know. Dreams don't ever seem that real to me. Even if it meant that I'd have to leave Isaac behind, I knew I needed to run. So I kept running. He's going to kill me.
"But it's Mate, he's waiting for us. This is the moment we've waited for forever," my wolf urged.
"God, I know. But Isaac has treated us well so far."
I knew the second I said those words that they were a lie. I'd never done something this terrifying before. I was scared. I'd never trusted my gut and my dreams of all things. This was stupid.
I halted immediately, letting my paws dig deep into the ground. My wolf growled at me. We'd only made it a mile out of pack lines, and neither of us felt very safe.
I made sure to leave early in the morning, about an hour before I knew everyone would be up. I'd covered my scent by rolling around outside. But I couldn't just give up, could I? No one patrols our borders, and Isaac and I haven't even been sleeping in the same room yet. So no one has stopped me so far. I just had to know.
"Keep running. Isaac knows we left, and it's only a matter of time before he catches up to us. I can tell he's angry; the link feels strained and almost prickly."
"Shut up, Pepper. Let me think."
Almost immediately, Pepper took over and we started running again. I forgot she could do that.
"Vivian, you know that we'd be stuck there for another hour if I wouldn't have taken over. Sorry, I want my mate. Our mate. We've waited two years, and our entire life basically, for this moment."
While Pepper left through trees, dodged bushes and rocks, and ran stealthily through the forest, I sat in the back of my mind, replaying the dream from last night.
~
I'm running. My fur flies as I race faster than I ever have before. I don't know why I'm running, but my heart knew why.
I stopped immediately, and I was suddenly in the middle of a huge arena. It was crowded, yet deathly silent. But there was a presence there that shook me to the core. Something pulling me emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. The air all around me smelled delicious, and it was like nothing even mattered anymore.
As I stood there, an announcer cleared his voice over the loud speaker.
"Vivian Foster..... switches.... for.... pack. Does... accept her?"
Everything around me went black, everything but a pair of deep brown eyes. They stared at me with such intensity that it was impossible to look away. A deafening roar shook the air around me, and shook me awake as well.
~
Those eyes have been haunting me ever since. The amount of passion held in them made my heart stop at the time. I knew what it meant: I had a mate somewhere. And judging by the arena, I knew where it was too. I just hoped I wasn't wrong. I couldn't afford to be wrong.
The pain in my forehead started to become too much. Isaac really wanted to talk to me, which was understandable. We were meant to get married in six months.
Once I knew I had made it a safer distance away, I let Isaac's voice fill my head, but I kept running.
"Vivian! What the hell are you doing? Where the hell are you going? And why the absolute fuck didn't you tell me anything?" Isaac screamed. I sighed, but he wasn't finished. "Was it what I said last night? You should take it as a compliment. I thought you loved me. We're mates, you know!"
Pepper growled at that comment.
"Isaac, look, I'm sorry, but I have to go."
"Why?! You're meant to be my Luna, my bride. I will find you. And when—"
"Isaac, I have a mate!" I cut him off.
Isaac was silent for a moment.
"Yeah, and it's me. Come back now or your ass will be sorry."
"No, my real mate. I had a dream and—"
"I AM YOUR REAL MATE!"
And with that, he cut off the connection. He must've been really mad to just shut me out like that. I knew this would hurt him, but I wanted my real mate. The fact that I knew he was out there would mean that I'd never rest until I finally found him.
In fact, I didn't rest until I had finally found the place that I had been looking for.
The Switching convention.
Author's note:
Thank you for reading the first chapter of the switching convention! It's something I'm really excited to be working on. I am in college, so I won't be posting too many updates all the time, but I'll try. I want to get back into writing, since my senior year English teacher made me feel like a terrible writer.
This isn't a typical werewolf book— well, I mean, it is— but I have a few of my own concepts that I'll be weaving in throughout the book.
I haven't written in a long time, so I know it's gonna be sloppy and simple, but it's something I want to create, so eh I don't care anymore. I would never start if I knew it had to be perfect.
Here's some information from this chapter to clear things up:
-Vivian Foster
—our lead girl! (The one you're *hopefully* rooting for). She's 20 years old, and a part of the Blue Crescent pack (something that I'll mention later). More will be told about her, but just know that her alpha is Isaac Porter. I'm going to try to keep physical descriptions out of this, just so that you can make her into whatever you'd like, but sorry if I add stuff. I forget sometimes :)
-Pepper
—vivian's wolf! She's completely black with white speckles along her snout and paws, which is why she's called Pepper, since white is peppered throughout her fur. I know I could make her white with black speckles so that she'd actually be like pepper, but I want her to be a black wolf because white wolves are overused (plus salt isn't a cool name, sorry). She is a little bit more of a decision-maker than Vivian is, but she usually lets Vivian take the lead. She only really talks to Vivian when she's making an important decision, or when she's in wolf-form.
-Isaac Porter
—alpha of the Blue Crescent pack. He's 25 years old. He really loves Vivian, and is very sure she's his mate. There's more background to him, and more to Vivian and Isaac's relationship, but I can't spoil it just yet!
Hope you enjoyed :)
