Emily's P.O.V
*DUN DUN DUN DUN DUNNA DUN DUNNNN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUNNA DUN DUNNNN* I open my eyes groggily, listening to my ringtone alarm go off. "This Is Halloween" has been my alarm since I was 17 years old and able to afford my own phone. It's 5a.m., Friday morning, just in time for me to get ready for the day. I slip on some black leggings and a ripped green and red sweater, ya know, Freddy Krueger style. I left my combat boots downstairs by the front door, great. Instead of my usual morning routine where I slip on my shoes, do my hair and makeup, and then leave the house, I now have to switch it up a little. I'm not OCD, it's just that having a plan every morning helps me wake up and know that I have enough time to do everything.
I make my way to the bathroom and put my long grey hair into a high, tight, ponytail. My makeup this morning was simple with just eyeliner, mascara, and highlighter. I didn't even bother trying to do my normal cat-eye eyeliner. It's hell trying to get that stuff even.
In case you're wondering what my daily routine is, I have to take care of my grandmother, but I call her Nana. Nana is my best friend. She's my mother, sister, BFF, and therapist all in one. She's 77 years old now, and she needs a lot of help doing basic things. She has a routine in the morning that goes a little something like this: Every Friday I wake up at 5a.m. to go to the grocery store that's 40 minutes away to get her favorite brand of coffee grounds, Community Coffee: Medium Roast. I then grab the only type of cigarettes she will smoke from the neighboring tobacco store: Merit Ultra Lights 100's. Then I drive back to the house, brew her coffee and fix her a cup, half a spoon full of sugar and fill the remaining of the cup with Coffee Mate. I help her out to the back porch where she sits in HER chair, by the ashtray, and she smokes her cigarettes, drinks her coffee, and complains about how the black birds are stealing all of the little birds food from the bird feeder.
Nana sits outside for about 35 minutes every morning in her robe. It's her favorite part of the day. While she's outside I take this time to fix my fathers lunch. He gets a sandwich everyday, but never the same kind a week, along with a bag of chips, a pickle, his medicine, and a water bottle. He leaves the house at 7:30a.m., and Nana is usually back inside by then. When my father leaves, she will make her way into the living room recliner and watch Family Fued for hours and when she's hungry she will let me know.
This is my routine every morning, except Sunday through Thursday, I wake up at 6:30a.m. instead of 5. You make think that this is awful, but after everything my Nana has done for me, it's the absolute least I can do. Plus, she doesn't NEED me to do it, it just helps her a lot. But between taking care of her and making sure my father stays happy and out of her way, I don't have a lot of time for much of anything — except video games.
Don't get that statement wrong, I'm not some master gamer or gamer girl or anything of that matter. I enjoy playing a few games every now and then, but I mostly enjoy watching youtube videos of people playing games. Commentary is hilarious. My all time favorite gaming YouTuber is Vanossgaming and his friends. I love how they all have these very distinct personalities and when they're altogether it makes for the funniest content. A little anecdote for you, I have actually saw Vanoss, also known as Evan Fong, at a local grocery store. The one I go to every Friday. I was grabbing my Nana's coffee blend when I dropped it and spilled it everywhere, and Evan came up to me and helped me pick it up. I thanked him and grabbed what I needed and left to my car, where I then cried hysterically because I was so star struck and I felt stupid for not at least asking for a picture. This is one of my deepest regrets.
It is about 3p.m. now, and my Nana is taking a nap in her room. I clean the house a little bit and go upstairs to my room to watch some YouTube on my phone. I find myself laughing loudly at Vanoss' new video and slowly drifting off to sleep — bad idea.
I hear a door slam downstairs, my dad must be home. MY DAD MUST BE HOME, I loudly said to myself. I checked my phone and the time read 5:27p.m. I fell asleep and forgot to cook dinner for him. I quickly ran downstairs and started apologizing to my father.
"You can't do simple god damn things can you?" He said to me
"I'm sorry dad, I fell asleep and lost track of time I'll have something ready in ten min-" he cut me off.
"You think I let you stay in this fucking house so you can sit around and sleep all day? You're 20 years old. Get a fucking job and move out if you're just gonna be a fucking bum all day!" My father yelled.
By this time, it had waken my Nana up and I went to put her at the kitchen table so I could make a quick dinner. I decided to make some chili dogs since it would only need the ingredients to be heated up. I fixed my dads plate and his jack and coke, with a splash of NyQuil in it, hoping it would make him tired. They both ate as I cleaned the dishes and then I put my Nana to bed. I was just finishing up drying the dishes to put up when I heard footsteps behind me. My father grabbed my ponytail and violently yanked it backward towards his mouth. I felt his liquor stained breath against my ear when he said, " Don't ever disrespect me like that again." He then threw my head forward, making my under eye hit the edge of the cabinets.
I held my breath and waited for his footsteps to disappear to let out a wincing moan. I put the rest of the dishes up and quietly ran upstairs to tend to the small bleeding on my cheekbone. It's going to leave a black eye which means I'm going to have to lie to my Nana. That's the worst part.
I laid down in my bed after taking off my makeup and letting my hair down. I changed into a tank top and pajama shorts and dozed off.
