"So the stairwells are on the bottom part of the second L and on the top part of this L" Jason clarifies.
"Yep. The LL is straightforward. You shouldn't have much trouble on this floor. Come on, let's get to the first floor. We are going to come out at the top of the left branch of the Y. The other is in a branch from the middle part of the Y," I explain.
"How many branches are there, if we think of it as a tree?"
"There's three on each top part and two at the middle. One on each side. The bottom of the main Y is the office and tech rooms. The drama type rooms are in the farthest branch on the right. The rest are just scattered around. Oh and the gyms are in the branch at middle left," I say as we walk the halls. "Now what class do you have and we can sit out front... if you want."
"Umm, drama," he says scanning his paper.
"Okay, it's down this hall."
"What's with the big smile?"
"No reason," I say grabbing his hand and jumping in front of him with a turn towards him. With a skip in my step, I walk backwards with my hand still connected with his. He starts to laugh but instead of looking down and hiding his smile, he looks straight at me.
"Move towards your left a little," he says as his hand guide mine. Jimmy and his band of friends walk by. He's actually guiding me so I don't walk into anyone! I force myself to stay looking at him instead of glancing backwards. He moves me so we're walking along the wall so I know where to turn. He grabs my other hand, criss crossing our arms. I feel my smile reaching to my ears. He starts to sway are arms back and forth curating a motion beat. Before I know it, he twirls me around, bringing me closer to him. Our laughter fills me with joy mixed with excitement. I never want this moment to end. And then it ends with the ringing of the stupid bell. The halls flood with people all rushing to their classrooms under the two minutes they have before being late. We get pushed up against the wall until the bell rings again and everyone finally clears the hall. Jason stops guarding me with his arms around me and looks through his bag for his class sheet.
"What room, I'll point you in the direction," I rush.
"Um it just says drama 10. What does that mean?"
I grab his hand, "come on!" I drag him down the drama hall, turning down the dark hallway. I speed up to the end and swing open the door. I kick off my shoes and gesture for Jason to do the same. As I take his bag and put it down beside mine as his shoes come off. As I go to turn around to look in the mirror, I realize our hands were still connected.
You have to be kidding me. Come on Shade!
Separating our hands, I put my hair back into a ponytail like everyone with long hair has to do.
"What are they doing?" Jason asks.
"Oh everyday once you get in the room, you take off your shoes and bags, join the circle, and make a random noise and repeat it until everyone is doing it with their noise. Ms Zable goes in the middle doing the attendance and sometimes will yell out names. If your name is called you yell out your noise then change it to something else. Once the attendance is done, ms Zable will yell sit and wherever you are, you sit. Then you listen to her instructions or what she has to say. Now hurry up, come on," I explain. Tightening my ponytail, I join the circle and start making a really stupid sound. Jason stands beside me looking shy and scared. I nudge him so he will make a noise and he starts one but way to quiet.
Looks like I have to put myself even more out of my comfort zone.
I link arms with Jason and Kayla. Kayla smiles with excitement. She loves when we do this. We both start making sounds until we decide on one.
"Just do what we're doing okay?" I break off. Jason nods and I join Kayla again. Jason takes a deep breath and does the same. Kayla decides to link arms with the other person beside her and eventually everyone is making the same noise. Ms Zable ducks under and goes to the middle of the circle with a clipboard. She scans the circle, marking down who's here. Her eyes land on me and a smile creeps across her face.
"Sit!" she yells out so everyone does what they're instructed to do. Her eyes stay locked on me making my stomach turn with my anxiety. She crouches down in front of me and whispers, "good job. Im proud."
"Thanks Ms Zable," I reply with a smile. Not a lot of people compliment me and hardy ever when I do something out of my comfort zone like that.
"Now that's a class. That's our team. That was simply amazing," Ms Zamble starts walking around the circle. "Now I was doing some thinking over the weekend and I came to the conclusion of a trust day. Basically I'm thinking every monday class, we come in and do our normal warmup and then all the rest of class is just a bunch of games. Not just any games though. Pick a partner each one of those days and we will be having competitions using trust. Today is just a day getting use to this but next monday, the marks start to come. Sound like a plan?"
"Why do we need trust competitions?" Jasmin, the girl who is always laughing but being annoying at the same time, asks.
"Last week when we were playing our games and learning, every time we did something with another person, you all kinda froze up and became timid. You all weren't sure what the other was going to do therefore wouldn't do everything smoothly and it's wasn't too fun for anyone. With this, every so often i will be picking your partners for the day and you will be having to put trust in each other. My hope is you all learn that making mistakes and looking 'stupid' is okay. You will hopefully learn to put that faith into everyone else and just go with the flow. Now I want everyone to pick a partner that you don't know well. Preferably someone you know nothing about," she explains. Everyone gets up and slowly start walking away from their friend group and look for someone who they hardly know. I hate being around people I don't know. I am going to hate Trust Mondays. Jason looks at me with his deep brown eyes shyly.
"Um, would you like to, um..." he starts.
"I would love to." I may not hate Trust Mondays after all.
