Lost in Nowhere
"Brace for impact!" yelled the captain of the ship through the speakers. People in the dining room dispersed towards the deck to get a look at what was going on. Everyone saw it, just a few hundred meters ahead of the ship, a giant iceberg. The ship was going too fast to avoid it. Minutes later, the lifeboats were deployed, life jackets were on, and people were evacuating. The lifeboats were merely big enough for two. Swimming in the cold water was exhausting. By the time I got onto a lifeboat, I only got a glimpse of the girl next to me before closing my eyes and falling asleep.
When I woke up, all my clothes were still wet. I looked around and saw nothing but open ocean. I got a better look at the girl that was on the lifeboat with me. She looked about my age 17, had blonde hair and a green pop styled jacket. When she woke up, I found out her name was Alexia, and she had been on her way to the Caribbeans for an educational trip. We spent the day on the lifeboat and were wishing for water and food. When the evening came along, we were extremely thirsty and hungry as neither of us had ever gone a full day without drinking or eating anything. We have never been in any situation like this ever. As the night rolled in, Alexia and I couldn't even gather enough energy to talk to each other. My eyes were heavy and my vision was blurry. Just when my eyes couldn't stay open any longer, I saw a bump in the horizon. I was sure it was hallucination, so I just let my eyes close.
Alexia woke me up. "Land!" she cried. We had washed up on an island and dawn was rising.
We walked for a couple minutes until I noticed a big bush full of raspberries. Alexia and I rushed to the bush and started to eat as much as we could. Berries had never tasted so sweet and delicious. Later, Alexia said that she would go to get some wood and leaves to make a little shelter and I went looking for drinking water, coconuts and dry wood to make a fire. After an hour Alexia had not returned so I decided to go look for her.
I was walking when I saw the unthinkable, there was a shelter already made with wood and leaves and next to it, there were big wide footsteps. It could not be human footprints, we were not alone. I started to get worried that Alexia might have been taken by this mythical and mysterious creature that was roaming around this island. I looked into the shelter and the only thing I found was...a camera. I picked it up, brushed of all the sand that had accumulated on the camera and opened the little screen, I saw a clip with the thumbnail of a teenage boy. He looked very confused, the boy looked skinny and very lost, I don't blame him though because I'm not much better. I did not hesitate but to play the clip, I saw him sobbing and explaining that he was not alone and all of a sudden a big creature appeared on the right side of the frame , then, it went black. Now I was very concerned for Alexia. I went back to our meeting point to see if she had returned but she was still not there. I started seeing the leaves on the top of the trees moving and to my surprise I heard Alexia scream. I spotted the vicious animal and started to run towards the creature that looked half dinosaur, half monster. I tried to kick it, still completely focused on Alexia, I came to the thought that there was no way I could save her. I decided to face the opposite direction and run as fast as my exhausted legs could.
When I finally came to a stop I almost passed out. I felt awful since I was so weak and I could not save Alexia. I ate a couple raspberries to gain strength and finally went to sleep.
The next day, I woke up and went back to the shelter to see if there was any sign of life. When I got there the whole shelter had been destroyed and the only thing that remained was Alexia's backpack she had taken along. I looked inside and shockingly I saw a safety kit with two flares. I grabbed the bag and walked back to the raspberry bush. Suddenly, the monster appeared. I started to run in a zigzag formation hoping I could lose it. I looked back and it was gone. If I did not get out of here in the next 24 hours I might never see any life out of me ever again. I was determined to get myself out this beautiful but dangerous island.
An hour later I heard a loud boat sounding horn, I immediately pulled one of the flares I had found and waved my arm as if I was saying goodbye. The boat immediately turn to my direction and honked to let me know they saw me. I started to get excited, and anxious in case the creature had seen the flare and is making its way towards me. I took Alexia's backpack as a memory and walked down towards the water. I started to hear leaves getting taken down, I looked behind me and there it was, the big creature that was trying its very best to keep the island from any human. I had no choice, I jumped into the water and started to swim as fast as I could until I reached the boat. I hopped on the boat even weaker than I was before, desperate for sugar and energy. The captain of the boat took care of me by giving me access to a room and the food bar. The wonderful captain and his crew comforted me,gave me a warm bunk and a fresh set of clothes. They had prepared an amazing meal including a hot bowl of soup and a whole selection of meats. I gobbled it all up as it felt like I had never had food in my life. From now on I have learned to not always be afraid and to go for things giving it my one hundred percent, I will now learn to never be afraid to commit to things I don't particularly want to.
