I let my eyes travel over his small, yet masculine body briefly. Our clothes were almost matching. He had on a long, thick, black coat, and underneath, a black shirt with a red and gray striped tie. His black hair was cut short, but it was curly like mine and so it did what it wanted to – right now, it was hanging nicely in soft curls around his sweet, striking face. He had on black skinny jeans and a skull face belt with dark red Converse.
I felt myself slowly but surely coming back down to earth as I basked in the inward and outward beauty of my best friend. I looked up at him and smiled, unintentionally rubbing my arm. After the embrace we had shared, it was almost like I needed to remind myself somehow that I was still human. Finally, I spoke. "Oh, fuck, I don't have a date, Billie. My mom and I had dinner plans tonight and –"
He smiled a little and nodded so I stopped talking. I didn't feel the need to explain. I had a feeling he already knew what was going on. He was aware of my mom's health issues.
I looked down at the floor.
"I know, I know, I'm just messin' with ya," he chuckled, gently picking up my chin and meeting my shit-brown eyes with his stunning emeralds. "It was like, fucking perfect timing, Steph. She called me. I was in town already for a meeting with Rob about production stuff for the next album, so she asked me to stop by and see you. She told me about the dinner plans you guys had. She felt bad that she had to cancel. I told her I'd come by and take you to dinner instead."
He was talking as fast as my heart was racing. We were overjoyed to see one another.
"It's crazy," he continued. "I actually flew in from Oakland early this morning and got a rental car to take me down nostalgia lane here around Manhattan...this place is still home to me even though I'm across the country now, y'know? I was going to surprise you tomorrow with a visit anyways, but then your mom called."
He held the beautiful bouquet out to me, motioning for me to take them. "These are for you," Billie smiled. "I know roses are your favorite."
I couldn't help but smile. My mom knew how much Billie meant to me. He was my best friend and he could always cheer me up.
"Thank you so much," I replied, wrapping him in what was now our third hug. I put them up to my nose and inhaled deeply. They smelled so good and fresh. "They are beautiful. I'm going to get a vase," I said, taking the flowers and making my way towards the kitchen. Billie followed behind me.
Billie proceeded to plop himself down on my leopard print sofa. "Man, I gotta get me one of these," he replied, rubbing his hand softly across the luscious material of the sofa. I glanced over at him and smiled, continuing to look for a vase. He was all sprawled out and he looked so comfortable. I wanted to join him. "So, where do you wanna go for dinner?" he asked eagerly.
"Billie Joe, you don't have to take me out to dinner," I protested. I carefully got down a crystal blue glass vase from my china hutch, filling it with cool water and placing the roses in it on top of the kitchen table.
"Come on, Steph," he whined. "We don't hang out anymore!"
He was right. Between his consistent touring with his band, Green Day, and me working two jobs, we didn't see one another as often as we used to.
"Yeah, because somebody just had to become famous!" I spat back at him with a mischievous grin, throwing myself on the leopard sofa right next to him. He took the decorated pillow next to him on the opposite side of the sofa and proceeded to hit me in the head with it. I laughed, and he did too.
"Shit, you know I didn't ask to be famous," he smiled. "I just do what I love: write music, play guitar, sing, and for some reason Mike and Tre keep me around."
