I saw you out there, peering over the parapet
Overlooking that gaudy terrain.
You seemed so calm, practically staring right down
Their barrels.
Doesn't it frighten you? To stand so close?
To stand so straight? To run the risk of crumpling to
The ground without a moment's notice?
I asked you that every day, and every night.
And still, you responded the same.
"I need to know what's out there."
But don't you know? Curiosity killed the cat.
And it was that very curiosity that killed you in the end.
The same curiosity that killed me too.
Because I saw you, out there, standing on that field
When I knew you were gone.
But I peered over the parapet anyways,
Screaming at you,
Begging you to run away.
And then I paid the ultimate price,
Just like you.

Parapet
Historická literaturaA little poem I whipped up when I was waiting for Udon. Relating and alluding to one of the scenes in my novel, this poem is inspired by the trench conditions in World War One.
