16 year-old, Brooke Abney stared at the empty walls of her bedroom. She wiped a tear away from her eye. Packing her things had made it all final.
Her mom going to the store and never coming home. The call from the hospital telling her about the car crash. How the drunk driver had hit her mom's car. Then rushing to the hospital. Seeing her mom just in time to catch her last words, "I love you", as she took her last breath.
When Brooke thought about it, she could still hear the flat toned ring from the heart monitor. Nurses rushing around her as they tried in a failed attempt to save her.
The aftermath had been the funeral, with hundreds of people telling Brooke how fantastic her mom was. Which of course Brooke appreciated, but mostly she didn't care what people had thought of her mom. She just wanted her back. The funeral had been really hard for her, a and right after the burial Brooke had asked to be taken home.
Brooke had been staying with her youth pastor, Pastor Erin, and his wife, Jessica, for the past weeks. She loved them. They were like family to her, but they really couldn't replace her real family. Even though Brooke trusted God with her life and knew he had a plan for her, she could help but question him on lonely nights. Why was this happening to her? The one without siblings. The one without a dad?
The only family she had left was her mom's brother, Uncle Jake, and his family. He had been appointed her guardian. In fact today was the day Brooke was leaving her small town to live with her uncle and aunt and 2 cousins, 17 year-old, Haddie and 14 year-old, James, in Wisconsin. The family lived a little bit out of town on a medium sized dairy farm with about 400 dairy cows. Brooke also liked the church they went to. It was a larger Baptist church of 650 people. She had liked the people and pastor last time she had visited, so she was hoping for a few friendly faces when she arrived there.
Brooke came out of her thought's as her door was flung open and her best friend of all time Abby rushed in. Brooke grinned and gave her friend a huge hug. Abby had been in Norway the whole past summer. Abby knew of everything that had been happening and had continually Skyped Brooke. She had tried to make it home the second she heard about Brooke's mom, but Brooke had insisted she stay until her trip had been scheduled to be done. Brooke had appreciated Abby's support and comfort over Skype, but in person it was different and more comforting for Brooke. Abby had always been there for Brooke, since they had been like five.
After a few minutes of talking Norway, Abby asked how Brooke was doing.
"I'm mostly good. I just miss how life was. Now it's all complicated. Especially since I'm on my way to Wisconsin today. " Brooke replied. A small smile plastered on her face. She wanted to stay ad positive about the move as she could.
Abby gave Brooke a small smile, then broke down saying, "I know!! I'm going to miss you sooo bad!!! Promise you'll text me everyday? Ugh, why can't you just stay with us? You're already like a daughter to my patents!"
"I wish I could stay, but I think I need to do this. Everything is so different I need a break from everything I know."
Abby nodded, her eyes starting to tear up.
"Ugh ok fine, I'll accept that your leaving, but you better come back I can't live without you! Your my best friend! How am supposto survive high school this year without my homework help?"
Brooke was about to reply when Jessica walked in. She smiled at both of the girls then turned to Brooke.
"Say goodbye, we need to go now or you'll miss your flight!"
Brooke gave Abby another hug while walking outside chatting with both of the people she concitered her friends. After climbing into the back if the car, Jessica started pulling out of the driveway. Brooke waved to Abby as they pulled out of the driveway. Tears slowly trickling down her cheek as she said good-bye to her entire past. She quickly dried her eyes.
Yes, she was saying goodbye to almost everything for her past, but she was looking forward to what seemed like a very bright future.
