Ch. 20: A Choice with No Regrets

Levi sighed heavily. "I don't wish to internalize those ideas though, Roxanne. I feel that deep down, you were aching to be treated decently, and since I wasn't as curt with you as others, you instinctively attached yourself to me . . . I was, in psychology-esque terms, a safe object for you. I respected you, both as a working individual and an independent woman.

"For me, it was tough searching for someone significant to share my life with too, and I gave up on that notion long before I met you. Look, I may be prattling now, but there's a meaning I want you to excavate from my vapid rambling . . . See, romance never came easy to me, and you know this firsthand already, but through you, I . . . I know I've made a drastic change in my mindset concerning women."

Furrowing his brows in a passionate stance, Levi vehemently explained, "So, in a sense, I was contributing to the pile of misconception and identification between the two of us! That's why I can't blame you for plastering a happy expression on your face in this depraved world! Humans aren't perfect, and dammit, that's the reason why I'm enamored with you so!

"You taught me that what I should have been seeking was imperfection, someone who harbored the characteristics of a real person. Someone who had been hurt, experienced tragedies, picked themselves up from the ground and persevered throughout the dark times! Hell, someone I could actually relate to when it came to my idiotic problems and hardships! I mean, people are always craving to have some sort of affection tossed their way, and someone to listen to them in their . . . "

"Levi," I murmured, chuckling nervously as I began to realize he was trailing off from the subject he was originally engrossed in.

" . . . and even if we have our disagreements, we work them out like any healthy couple! Oh, and the cold nights we prefer to keep the heater off so we can cuddle under the oodles of blankets; it's practically heaven on Earth! Don't let me forget that glassy shimmer in your eyes when . . . "

Levi cupped his right cheek with his free hand, fawning in a manner that was both bothersome, yet completely adorable by my standards. As he babbled on, I subtly shifted under the sheets and brought myself up to eye level with Levi. Unaware of my actions, he continued to talk incessantly about one thing or another concerning us, while I gripped his hand a bit tighter. Although, it didn't do much good; he was oblivious to the touch when all his attention was focused on speaking.

Enough was enough in my opinion, and I proceeded to demonstrate my capabilities in regards to shutting him up.

I leaned closer to his face and grinned sweetly, followed by my lips pressing a light kiss to his warm, left cheek.

Almost instantly, Levi's body went completely rigid, and a trembling smile pulled at the corners of his mouth. "I . . . uh . . . C-Carried away?" he inquired with a slight stutter, his speech faltering from the distraction I caused.

"Perhaps just an itty bit," I answered, snickering gleefully at his embarrassed expression, "but it's one of the many reasons why I love you dearly."

I resumed my quiet chortling as Levi registered my words thoughtfully. After my giggling had died down, Levi joined in late, huffing out awkward puffs of laughter until I too, was a tittering mess again because of his delayed reaction to his blabbering. Closing my eyes, I breathed out more airy snickers as I rested my forehead on Levi's shoulder, listening to the mixture of our combined, cheerful sounds filling the room.

Once the two of us had calmed down a considerable amount, I lifted my head up and peeked at Levi, whose rainy irises were glittering with a sense of happiness when they fixated themselves on my giddy figure. It was times like these that I stopped to immensely appreciate the impact Levi had made in my life, and how easily he was able to erase my worries and doubts with something as simple as communication.
