Chapter 1

Why do people write their autobiographies? An ego trip? Want to tell the world how great they are or were? I debated the pros and cons of tackling this chore for those reasons. Then I realized that I wished I knew more about my own father & mother & their parents. On the other hand, I think my offspring probably know all there is to know about me (even about Irene Speckenbach!). Maybe I shouldn't assume! Maybe my grand children or even great grand children would like to know! Anyway, a couple of them did ask me to do it! So, what the hell! Here are some of my recollections.

My life (88 years, so far!) began on October 27th, 1922 in the city of New York. Those 88 years fall into three clear cut time frames, separated by easily identified, very significant turning points.

Chronologically, my youth, obviously the first part, lasted nineteen years, coming to an abrupt end when I enlisted in the U. S. Army right after Pearl Harbor in 1942. Part two, what I used to refer to as "my war years", didn't end until after I was discharged from the service, met, was bewitched by and married Patricia Mary Gaffney

Son Gerald coined the phrase, "Life with Pat & Warren". I'll coin a phrase by calling part three, "Life with Pat & our Fabulous Five!"
