There you stood, a Pro-Hero turned intern in your own Agency. The humor of the situation had not been lost on Kazuma, as he was now not the lowest on the totem pole. Earlier this month, on one of the long intelligence-gathering nights, Kazuma explained why he remained a Sidekick, despite his 10 years of service.
One month earlier...
"I thought about going Pro, but Sidekick is more my speed. The hours are better, my life feels more complete, I am a hero but I also run a dojo when I'm not here. It's been in my family for generations, so I'm continuing that practice..."
Back to the present...
Those heartfelt words back then, about his family's dojo and why he's a sidekick... did not mean that he didn't relish your newly reclaimed position as an intern. Which is why, you now found yourself suspended midair scrubbing and cleaning the massive windows of HQ overlooking the ocean. Yuki had decided to help you out, they had said something about not trusting Pink or Kazuma to not mess around too much with you, and Bo was busy on a mission with GT. The two of you were almost done with this menial task, and the cleaning and organizing would be finished. Then you were all embarking on a pretty hush-hush, serious mission. Yuki pulled you up to the roof, patting you on the back for a job well done.
"I don't think those windows have ever been cleaner. We will have to put Kazuma on bird-shooing duty so they don't mess them up!" Yuki laughed lightly, nudging you with their elbow. You cracked a smile, the past day or so had done a lot for your relationship since the two of you didn't usually work together. Yuki was like no one you'd ever met before and you enjoyed their presence. They were gentle, focused, relaxed, but also quick-witted, and passionate. You'd gotten used to using the proper pronouns with Yuki, it was easy, if that's what Yuki wanted you could do that!
"Oh, by the way, we've got to investigate some Trigger-related instances before the big mission we've been included on. Kazuma is preparing the presentation in the office, go change and join us down there in 10 minutes." They instructed you and you followed their orders immediately.
Walking into the dorm-like area of the HQ, you stripped down to your undergarments and tossed your now sweat and window-muck stained clothes in the communal laundry basket. Pulling on charcoal sweats and the sweater your mom had made you and Tsu, you slipped into your house slippers. Only then, you took a moment to check the messages on your phone. You hadn't been in school all week, you'd been here with the Tridents, with permission of course. Tsu and Uraraka were with the "Dragon Hero" Ryukyu, Izuku was with Sir Nighteye, Kirishima was with Fat Gum, and Bakugo was taking remedial classes to obtain his Provisional License Exam.
You were proud of your friends for doing so well and obtaining internships with such prestigious heroes. Now that you weren't just completing your field experience, you'd been given the wifi password so now you could text and call your family and friends. You texted your four friends with internships a generic "Hi! I miss you! Hope your internship is going well!" But for Tsu, you attached a picture of you in your sweater and told her you'd just washed a massive window for two hours - no one else needed to know how your internship was going. Then a small smile crossed over your lips, you texted the boy that knew your newest secret.
Y/N - Mirioooo! Hope you're having fun with Izuku - don't beat him up too badly. Miss you!
The thirty seconds that passed between that text felt like hours. It wasn't that you two didn't text, quite the opposite, but still, it made you nervous every single time.
Mirio - Fishhhhh! Having lots of fun, but would've been more fun if you'd accepted Sir Nighteye's offer!
Your face erupted in a bright pink blush, Sir Nighteye knew you weren't going to accept that offer, but Mirio's words still brought to life all of the butterflies deep inside her.
Y/N - Shh! You're making me blush. Gotta run - team meeting in 5. If you're free later, I want to show you the view from the office and I think Facetime would work best.
You squeezed your eyes so tight it almost hurt. You'd never facetimed him before, but you wanted to see him.
Mirio - Sounds perfect, you tell me when and I'll make time for you. Enjoy your meeting!
As you went to leave your phone on your bunkbed, your friends' texts began pouring in, it looked like they were finishing up with their missions or class, you weren't sure. After responding to your friends, and a two-minute phone call with Tsu - explaining why Kazuma made you clean the window- you realized you still had three minutes to spare. Finally putting your phone on your bed, a quick notification drew your attention back to your device - a name you hadn't seen in a long while made you furrow your brows.
Bakugo - Yo. Where you at? Why're you skipping class?
Oh no - you had forgotten to tell Bakugo about your internship... Well what did he expect you to do? He didn't even talk to you anymore.
Y/N - I'm interning with the Trident Agency, the one I did my field experience with. Gotta run, meeting in a minute. Let's catch up later if you're free?
His response was immediate - faster than it had ever been.
B - Yes - I don't have classes tonight. Let's Facetime or something.
Y/N - Ok, sounds good.
And then you left your phone on the bed and walked to the office with one minute to spare.
"Oh - taking your time today aren't we Y/N?" Kazuma taunted from his seat across the room.
"Hey Kazuma, don't you have bird watching duties? That gorgeous window needs to be protected at all costs." You threw back at him, smiling along with Yuki and Pink.
You sat down, between the Yellow Trident and Pink, Yuki - the Silver Trident - stood at the front of the room, clicker in hand to control the slideshow they had been instructed to show.
"So, we are all experts in the Trigger case - both American and Asian produced - but the big mission we need to be preparing for doesn't involve this drug at all. It involves the League of Villains and the Eight Precepts." Yuki began the slideshow, clicking to the next slide. The peeping-tom-like photos displaying your least favorite multi-handed freak and another freak with a bird-like metal mask.
Yuki continued, "I know we recognize Tomura from the LOV... But this man here, is Kai Chisaki. And these two evil doers wish to combine their forces. We will provide backup, firepower, and surveillance for the major agencies running this operation."
The presentation and debriefing continued - if these were the faces of evil you would have to face - then you were going to train even harder on your quirk and its facets. If you were going to be Neon Splash for this mission, you had to master your scales and your ultimate moves. You could totally handle this - basic internship activities, maintain friendships, prevent a dangerous quirk boosting drug from destroying people, train yourself to perfection, and eventually take down a great evil? Truly a piece of cake - as long as the slice was a bit bigger than your mouth and your fork was too small.
