Today was my eighteenth birthday. I was celebrating it with the Mattews, my mom, Shawn and all of our friends. All the Matthews were there to celebrate; including Josh. He had been staying with Cory and Topanga for a couple weeks, since he was apparently having problems back at his dorm room. Him being there made my birthday complete.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Maya, happy birthday to you!" Everbody sang to me in unison, well except instead of saying Maya, Riley said Peaches, as she always does. I had closed my eyes to make a wish and there was only one thing that I wanted; to be with Josh. They clapped when I blew out the candles.
"What ya wish for, Peaches?" Riley says with a huge smile on her face.
I glanced at Josh then back at Riley. "Oh c'mon Riles, you know if I tell you then it won't come true." I giggled and scooped up some icing with my finger and wiped it on Riley's nose. She laughed and proceeded to do the same.
"OK, it's present time, Maya!" Topanga says eagerly. "You are gonna love my gift Maya."
I went over and sat on their couch. Topanga handed me her gift. It was large and a bit heavy, but that didn't matter, I ripped off the wrapping paper. My eyes lit up in excitement. A complete art set with everything I could possibly need.
"I figured since you got into Columbia University, you'll need a few things."
"OMG! This is amazing! Thank you so much!" We hugged. "This is definitely what I needed most. Great gift indeed, Mrs. Matthews."
"Okay. Me now!" Riley says sitting next to me, holding out a gift.
"Aw, thanks Riles." I take the gift and quickly unwrap it. She put together a scrapbook with pictures and other memories throughtout our friendship together. "Wow, Riles! I love it!"
" It's for when you get homesick during your time abroad."
" Thank you. This means a lot to me." I smile.
Everyone proceeded to hand me a gift one by one. Each gift was amazing and I appreciated every single one. The only problem was that Josh didn't get me a gift. I shouldn't think too much into it, I mean why would he get me a gift. It's not like I was expecting him to.
For the rest of the party, everyone mingled, danced and ate cake. I sat with Riley in the living room bay window.
"What's on your mind, Peaches?" Riley says before shoving another fork full of cake.
I shook my head. "It's nothing."
"No, it's something." She says, the cake in her mouth muffled the sound but I could understand her.
I sighed in defeat. "It's just Josh didn't get me a present. I thought he would at least do that."
She wiped her mouth with her napkin. " Oh Peaches." Riley brought me in for a hug, and I laid my head on her shoulder. "Maybe he did get you a gift and he has it back at his dorm room."
"Or he forgot about my birthday."
"No! How could he forget? He has been staying here for some time now. He heard all of us talking about your party." She suddenly looks up and I did the same. It was Josh; headed our way.
He sits down next me and I sit up. "Happy birthday Maya."
"Thanks Josh." I say with a smile.
"So, listen, I got you a gift. I just wasn't able to wrap it."
"That's fine. Where is it?" There was nothing in his hands so I was a bit curious.
"Uh...it's out in the hallway." He stood and motioned for me to follow him.
I looked at Riley, who shrugs, and then back at Josh. No one seems to notice as I followed him into the hallway of the Matthews apartment. He closes the door behind him. We were now completely alone, together.
"Okay. So where's my gift?" I say, my heart besting a little faster.
"Now this is something I have been thinking about for awhile. I think it's probably the best gift, in my own-."
Annoyed I cut him off. "Josh, what is it?"
He placed his hands on either side of my face, gazed into my eyes, and pressed his lips against mine. We kissed for what seems like forever. This...this was the moment I waited for since middle school.
He pulled away. "...Happy Birthday, Maya."
