Her hands clutched the wheel, while twisting the worn leather a little. Her eyes stared straight ahead as her opponent stared at the left side of her face with a certain grimace and overflowing arrogance.
"Be prepared to lose!" He shouted over the revving engines. She almost laughed at his insolence and cocky demeanor but she had to maintain her unfazed expression.
Never let them see emotion...it's the quickest route to losing.
With that in mind, she tightened her jaw and concentrated on the girl ahead with a bandana in her hand. The engines revved more, the crowed raucously screamed and the bandana dropped to the floor. Within seconds the cars were off and dust was everywhere.
Keep your foot on the pedal!
She maintained the position of her foot on the gas pedal and she pressed it down even harder. They were neck and neck at the moment but she kept inching forward.
Never use your speed so early in the race.
She breathed in and out and focused on her decent down the dusty mountain road as she drove through the tracks.
Slow down and drift around corners.
She released some pressure off of the gas pedal and grabbed her staring with such ease and poise as she executed the drift around the tricky mountain bend perfectly.
She looked in the mirror and realized she had gained some lead as the man appeared frightened to drift around the bend.
"Amateur." She muttered to herself with a smile on her face.
They were nearing the finish line at the bottom of the mountain and her opponent was metres behind her; she had the opportunity to use her speed and win by a landslide but truly, she was intrigued by the man and gave him a chance to redeem himself.
She decreased her speed and watched in her rear view mirror as the guy began to trail behind her on the narrow road. Soon they exited the mountain and they were now driving on a wide flat road where the man was able to neck and neck with her again.
"Be prepared to lose!" He shouted once more as he slammed his foot down on the gas pedal and released his NOS, leaving her to literally eat his dust.
Yet again, a smile appeared on her face as they both approached the finish line. She had on trick up her sleeve and this imbecile was just about to find out what it was.
With only a few seconds left in the race, she accelerated her Tuatara and she was able to arrive at the finish line before he even had a chance to comprehend what just happened.
Stepping out of her car, applause and adoring shouts reigned in her ears as she reveled in the glory of winning yet another race.
"What happened? I had that race! I was about to beat your winning streak!" The man wiped the sweat off from his face and waited for his answer from the winner.
"What happened was you lost and I need to receive my payment." She responded with the calmest voice she possessed.
"I-I can't do t-that." The man was now trembling in fear and everyone was wondering where his macho attitude disappeared to.
"And why can't you do that?" A man appeared behind the girl and stared menacingly at the man who looked as though he was about to shed some merciful tears.
"Please Maddox, anything but my car! I need it to make money for my family! You can't take away my only source of income!" The man pleaded while his last shred of dignity of whisked away into thin air.
"Jack, racing is your only source of income?" Maddox inquired with a half genuine look of sympathy plastered onto his fair complexion.
"Yes, it is! So please don't take my car as payment!" He was on his kneels now.
"Why? You suck at it. You could have just sold the car to the highest bidder and that would have provided you with enough money than your racing skills could have." Maddox laughed in the man's face, humiliating him even further.
"Roxanne, what should we do? Should we have some sympathy for this man?" The man looked towards her with unbearable pain in his eyes but she was immune to such looks...she had to be.
"Or should we take his car and leave him with nothing else?" The man shook his head violently and hoped that that wouldn't be his fate.
"I believe I can answer that Maddox." A man in a black suit emerged from the silent crowd as they prepared a pathway for this man of power to walk through.
"Ah, Michael Caniff...King and Owner of the underground racing franchise...the one who always likes to spoil my fun." Maddox laughed.
"I let you have much more this time Maddox but I decided to save this poor lad from his misery."
Mr. Caniff casted his eyes upon the beggar whose knees were probably hurting from the uneven pitch of the road and he took a few steps in front of him so he was standing in a position which expressed his power and status marvelously.
"I'll take care of him Roxanne...don't worry my daughter, I'll update you on the outcome of our little agreement." Mr. Caniff smiled and ordered a few strong men to help escort Jack to his private office so that they can discuss some business.
"So," Maddox turned to Roxanne with an award winning smile on his face, "That Mustang is definitely ours by tomorrow; it just needs to be cleaned out and amped up."
Roxanne laughed at him as he looked at the car with such love and admiration on his face. She knew in her mind that he had already claimed this car and no one could tell him otherwise.
"Roxanne! Roxanne! Roxanne!" The crowd cheered for her as she had just won yet another race with such little effort.
