I shrug it off, though it seemed a bit straighforward for a sentence starter. "It's alright. Yeah, actually, I was – kind of to myself for a while, I guess. Just going through some things."

"Awe, sweetie," Tisha pouted. "You're alright now?"

I nodded smiling lightly. "Yes."

"What things were you going through?" Jimmy asked, pestering on.

I raise my eyebrows, a little shocked and Hayden flips. "Dad, cut it out, please!"

I rub my arm awkwardly. "It's a little personal, I'm sorry."

"It's okay, nobody is forcing you!" Tisha said, nudging her husband while rolling her eyes.

"I mean, he has been MIA for five whole years, so it must be important," Jimmy continues.

"Um, I-" I feel my hands go clammy. This is agony.

"Dad!" Hayden shrieks. "If he doesn't wanna talk yet, he doesn't have to!"

Jimmy looks genuinely confused and shrugs dramatically. "What's the harm in asking?"

"He just isn't ready to talk yet." Carson chimed in saying it quietly,

I lower my head, embarrassed. "I'm sorry."

"No don't be," Jimmy says. "If you want to process your little feelings first, then no one's stopping you." He teased like a child

This time, he earns a slap on the arm from Tisha. "Jesus, Jimmy!"

"Um, excuse me for a moment," I say, standing up from the table and heading up the stairs. I sit on the top stair and try to contain my heavy breathing and glossy eyes.

"SEE WHAT YOU JUST DID, DAD? IF HE DIDN'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT HE DIDN'T HAVE TO!" I hear Hayden shout from down below. He did it again. After what happened last time, he still did the same thing.

...

*flashback*

Hayden, Carson and I are having a sleepover at Hayden's place tonight. At about ten at night, we decide it's time for bed.

"You guys ready for bed?" Hayden asks with a yawn.

"Sure," Carson says.

"Yeah, but I'm gonna get some water first," I say, trudging down the stairs. I walk down the steps into the kitchen, and grabbed a glass from the dish rack. First, I rinse it out. Then I filled it with the filtered water switch on the sink. I don't get too far into my second sip when I hear a voice from behind me.

"What're you doing up?" I turn around and swallowed the water in my mouth.

"I'm sorry, I was just getting water. " I said making my way back to the steps. Jimmy instantly grabs my arm lightly

"Woah, what's the hurry?" His deep, raspy voice makes a shiver run down my spine. I remove my arm from his grasp and croak, "I'm tired."
