Jim Gordon walked into his precinct building, swamped by reporters, all asking about the surprising death of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Gordon knew as much as they did, and he tried to tell them that but nothing worked on the media.

It's gonna be a long day.... Gordon thought grimly.

As he pushed his way through the sea of reporters, he spotted his lieutenant calling for him. Gordon slowly moved towards Lieutenant Loeb, soon to be commissioner.

"Gordon, I know you're as shocked as I am about the Wayne deaths, but I don't want you in the field," Loeb said

Gordon gaped, "But you need someone to do the investigating!"

"We have our best men on the case, and I have something else planned for you,"

Loeb pointed into Gordon's office and sighed. Inside was a small child, barely 10 years old. He had black hair that swept down on the left side. He wore a black jacket and designer pants, shoes that Gordon knew only the rich could afford. Just one look at the blank stare of the boy told Gordon everything, this was the Wayne's only child, Bruce.

"Don't tell me...." Gordon muttered.

"He witnessed everything, he's our only witness," Loeb said grimly, "I want you to try and pry the truth out of him."

"Why me?"

"You're our most qualified, and the last man left, we're overextended as it is."

Gordon nodded and pushed his way back through the media into his office, into the room where the newly orphaned boy sat.

As Gordon walked in, he smelled the misery and felt coldness. Bruce wore a blank stare at the floor. Gordon knew he was trying to hold back his emotions.

"You know, it's ok to cry right now," Gordon said softly.

The boy looked up and his eyes were pools of sadness. Gordon could tell he was holding back tears.

"Why.... Why did he do it?" whimpered the boy, his voice breaking as he said it.

Gordon sat down next to Bruce and rubbed his back. He couldn't possibly guess what the boy was going through in his head.

"It's my fault they're dead..... I wanted them to go to the show...." the boy said softly

Gordon was shocked that the boy would think this. How could anyone think this? Crime in Gotham was rarely planned out, anyone could be a victim. Gordon was about to say this but the boy fell asleep. He must've been tired from his night, it would've been long, no doubt.

Gordon took off his coat and put it on top of the boy and left the office to get his coffee. He would get the information about the murders soon, but not now.
