Piper's sorrow

Percy's POV

It's time for Capture the Flag. I couldn't wait to let the red team taste defeat. We suited up and Abbie had a sword at her hip and was clutching a piece of parchment. The other teams captain, Clarisse stalked up to Abbie and I. "So we have Prissy 1 and 2. See you later." She sneered. Abbie simply gazed at her with her sea green eyes. Clarisse looked uncomfortable and stalked away. Abbie jogged to catch up with the rest of our team. She murmured a few words in Ancient Greek. "You can't be affected by charmspeak now." She told our team. We all cheered and headed to our designated positions. I was standing by the river and Abbie was next to me. We heard the conch horn that signalled the start of the game. We waited and listened to the clashes of battle deep in the woods. Suddenly Leo burst through the trees with Nico and Jason behind him. Leo was on fire, literally and Nico had his sword out. Abbie dumped the contents of the river on them. Leo's fire went out with a hiss and Nico spluttered curses. Jason glared at Abbie and called lightning down to hit her. It struck her directly on the chest. She gasped and her eyes widened. She seemed to fall in slow motion. Abbie hit the ground and her eyes closed. "Chiron! Help!" I didn't care my voice was cracking. My sister was dying. Nico hurried over the creek. I knew that he liked my sister because she didn't judge him instantly and didn't want her to die. "Her life force is weak. It's trying to hold on though. Let me try something." He closed his eyes and laid his hands over her heart. A dark glow of energy surrounded her and she seemed to sigh. "That should help." Nico looked shaky and he was paler than ever. Chiron cantered towards us. "What happened?" I gestured to Jason. "He struck her with lightning! Now she's DYING." I yelled. Chiron sighed. He picked Abbie up and headed to the infirmary. Annabeth shimmered into existence next to me. "We won. Malcolm got the flag. Come on we have to see Abbie." She told me gently. I followed her numbly through the forest. I just found my sister. Today I might lose her. Annabeth was gripping my hand tightly. Although Abbie was my sister, Annabeth had grown very close to her very quickly. Abbie looked at things the same way as she did, something none of her other female friends did. We got to the infirmary quickly and walked to where Abbie was lying. "She'll be ok. She was lucky Nico was there. Without him she would have died. He gave up some of his life force to help her. It will come back though." Chiron told us and we relaxed. I sat on her left and Annabeth was on the right. Abbie stirred a few minutes later. "Hey. I'm ok. I'll be fine right? I mean lightning won't hurt me too badly cos I was blessed by Zeus. Tell Nico thanks if I'm not awake when he comes in." We hugged her as hard as we dared to. "You're ok. Thank the gods." Gabriel burst in, closely followed by Will. Drew came in sulking and Jason was trailing behind. "I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me. It felt like there was someone telling me to attack Abbie. It whispered in my ear. A cold tingle maybe." Jason said. I wondered what would try to start a war by killing someone who would be important in the next great prophecy. It could be Gaia, Hyperion or any of the Titians. Maybe it was Khione. After all Jason didn't stay with her in Quebec. "Well Gabriel we have to go on our date. I don't want to be late." Drew told him, breaking the silence that had descended. Will gave her a scathing look. She looked at him defiantly. "Come on Gabriel." She dragged him out of the door. Abbie sighed and her eyes shut. Nico came through the door. He had an arrow embedded in his aviator jacket sleeve. "Thanks Nico. You saved me. But please tell her. You never know. It might turn out the way you want." Nico scowled at the floor and pulled out the arrow. "It never turns out the way I want." He muttered. "You know just because you're 17 now because the gods speeded up your ageing process so you could be the same age as us, doesn't mean you know what's gonna happen in the future." Abbie told him softly. He glowered at the wall. "Please." He met her dark eyes and sighed. "Fine. For you. If I die it's your fault." He told her. She squealed like the little girl she must have been. Before tragedy and loss made her grow up too quickly. Nico smiled and headed out of the door. "Night Abbie. Get some sleep." Annabeth said before heading back to our cabin.

Annabeth's POV

I was happy that we won the game and that Abbie was going to be ok. She had escaped from the infirmary and was now talking to Hazel and Frank. They seemed to be having a animated conversation. Abbie finally seemed to win when she summoned a chunk of gold and changed into a tabby kitten with glowing green eyes. Abbie the kitten padded towards me. "Mew." She purred at me. I groaned. I walked off to find Grover with Abbie the kitten following me. "Grover can you talk to the kitten?" He eyed me strangely and Percy seemed worried for my sanity. "Why Annabeth?" Grover asked carefully. I guess I have a reputation for maiming people. "Ugh I'm not insane. This is your sister Percy. She won't change back." Grover began a long conversation with Abbie the annoying kitten. "Piper likes kittens. Abbie wants to cheer her up." Grover told us. I groaned. "Fine come on........ What should I call her? I mean I can't introduce her as Abbie can I?" Grover had another shorter conversation with Abbie. "She says call her Jewel. She has always liked that name." I gestured for Abbie, I mean Jewel followed me to the Aphrodite cabin. Piper opened the door. Her eyes were red and swollen but when she saw the kitten they lit up. "Awwww she's adorable. What's her name?" Piper asked, giggling and smiling. I smiled too. This was the first genuine smile I had seen on her face since Jason broke up with her. "Jewel is her name. You know because her eyes are like jewels?" I replied. Piper motioned that I should come in. 'Jewel' followed, rubbing against Piper's legs as she went. We sat on her bed and Jewel hopped onto Piper's lap before curling up. Piper stroked Jewel absent-mindly as we talked. "I don't know what happened. I mean just one week ago we were happy and now..." She trailed off. Jewel rubbed her head against Piper's hand for more petting. "Piper I don't know what to say. I've never been good with love and matters of the heart. I'm a Athena girl. Smart and wise sure but I'm not equipped for love. I can tell you this though. If Jason truly loves you, he'll come back. Hold on to that when everything seems dark ok? But whatever happens you will always have me, Percy, Thalia, Leo and even the new girl Abbie. We're here for you. Abbie is cheering you up right now." I said, trying to lift Piper's spirits. "What? How is Abbie raising my spirits?" She asked. Jewel hopped off her lap and changed back in to her human form. "Hey Piper. Sorry about that. I heard you liked cats so I thought this would help cheer you up." Piper smiled at her. "Thanks Abbie. It really helped. I didn't know you could change into animals though." Abbie smiled mysteriously. "Well we'd better get to lunch. I don't know about you but I have a hard afternoon ahead of me." I said as my stomach growled. They giggled and we headed out to dinner. On the way we bumped into Will and Percy and........Jason.
