The sun shone over a jungle of metal buildings piercing the sky. Under these buildings were five levels of streets being stacked ontop of eachother. The buildings were gradually separated by the streets. The entire place was buzzing with activity, however the city surrounding the metropolis seemed to be poverty stricken, with many lower income apartments being dwarfed by the skyscrapers of the metropolis. The sun seemed to burn the buildings that weren't in shadows, and the entire district seemed to be in pain. Whether it be by the sun beaming down on them, or the countless shady figures stalking the streets, the residents of the district were certainly unhappy. This unhappiness often led to many looking up at the skyscrapers and dreaming about "what if". That was what Jackson was doing on that dreadful day.
He looked out of his outdated apartment and wondered what it felt like to not worry about eviction. Jackson shook himself out of this day dream and began packing up the rest of his belongings. After packing up he went into the bathroom to freshen up a bit. He splashed some water on his face, he was tired from a restless night. Jackson's hair was unkempt as was his beard, and after washing his face he gave a silent goodbye to his apartment. He entered the long hallway and began the long track to the ground level. As his long walk continued he saw more tired faces, all of which seemed to have their own levels of misery. When he finally made it out to the streets the sun immediately punished him for leaving the cool building. Jackson's pale skin was slowly being burned from the beams of light.
As the sun continued its assault, Jackson walked through the crowded streets to the edge of the city. He made his way to a bench and sat down next an old friend of his. Jackson looked out to the sea of yellow grass and foxtails outside the city. This silence was broken by his friend trying to start a conversation.
"So they finally kicked ya' out? Damn corporates love kicking people out to make their big towers."
Jackson sighed and said, "Yeah, I've got no idea what I'm going to do, I lost my job and my apartment. I don't know what to do Dave."
Dave tried to reassure Jackson by saying, "Yeah well you're a brown haired, hazel eyed, hardworking, and angry man. I'm sure you'll get through it."
"I don't think it's gonna happen if I'm unemployed, you find any job offers?"
"Yes, actually. I got a contact that works at a shipyard, said they needed more hands. Only problem is the place is known for harboring some shady figures."
Jackson replied with a tired tone, "Hell man, I'll take anything today. I just want to stay afloat right now."
"All right then, it's 'The Long Straight Shipyard' out in the grassland, you can take the public tram to the West End industrial zone. It's in the far west of the district."
Jackson gazed out at the grassland a bit longer and said, "I'll see you there, take care of yourself Dave."
Dave looked at Jackson and said, "You too man, keep your wits about ya' that district is filled with all kind of people."
Dave gave a little nod before walking away from the bench. Jackson sighed and got up from the bench. He made the long walk to the tram station, still being assaulted by the sun. The station was indoors with a few benches strewn about. After he sat down a figure walked up besides him. When Jackson looked up he saw something he only heard about, a hound. The hound looked like a mix of a a human and a wolf, his fur being a faded brown in color. Jackson just stared at it for a solid minute, not saying anything.
The hound finally spoke in a distraught voice, "You mind if I sit by you?"
Jackson simply responded with a tired nod. As the hound sat by him he began wondering all sorts of things, but all he could say was, "Where you heading?"
