Juvia has confessed her feelings to Gray in many ways. But he rejected all. The last one was what surprised Juvia the most.
Gray raged, and told her she is a distraction, a rain woman, a Phantom woman. After his outburst, Juvia was ignored by him for a year. Juvia couldn't take any more of Gray, and left Magnolia, leaving Fairy Tail and Gray.
On the way, she was sheltered by a water mage named James and has lived there ever since.
