"I just don't understand why you are doing this Emma!" Regina panicked as I ran around my bathroom grabbing my toothbrush, toothpaste, and other necessities that I needed for this trip.
"I just need to get out of the city for a little bit," I replied as I put my toothbrush in a plastic bag before putting it in my suitcase. I was tired of all the fake people and processed unnatural things that I have been living around. I grew up in the country and I missed it.
"No you don't. You just want to get away from Neal," she said. That made me stop in my tracks and look at her. I could see the hurt in her eyes and I felt terrible, but I need to do this. I sighed in defeat and looked down at the carpet in shame.
"Okay yes that's part of it, but-"
"No Emma. There is no but about this. You need to stop running from all of your problems," she interrupted me in a slightly angry tone now.
"I'm not running Regina."
"Yes you are. You tried to run when Neal proposed, but I was the one who convinced you to stay and I am glad I did," she replied.
"Why? Are you glad that he cheated on me? Are you glad that I'm heartbroken?" I asked with a raised voice. I was getting angry at this point. I couldn't believe that she would be happy of causing me this pain.
"Of course not. I love you Emma and you know that. I'm glad because you didn't run. Yes it ended badly. I'm sorry I didn't see that Neal would do something like that, but neither did you. I'm glad because it showed you that there is hurt in the world and you need to face it instead of running from it. You've been so scared of getting hurt your whole life that whenever you do get hurt, you shut out your feelings and run." She explained to me as I sat next to her on my queen size bed.
"I have dealt with this pain though. It's been two months now since the divorce and I've had to see him every day at work still. He doesn't even look at me. It's like I don't even exist to him, and that hurts. I've dealt with that hurt for two months and I'm tired of that. I've dealt with it long enough. I just need to get out of this city and away from him and away from life for a little bit. I need to clear my head," I told her trying to explain everything I was feeling to the best of my ability.
Neal and I met each other through the NYPD where we both work. I originally met him through a friend and he eventually switched to the office where I work. So now I see him everyday in the office and he laughs with the other guys, but ignores me. All the other guys are on his side for some reason even though he is the one who cheated on me. The two girls at the station, Regina and Ruby, understand my side, but that's it. He makes me feel so alone in this world and I'm just so tired of being around him and feeling like that.
"I can't stop you Emma, but know that you doing this is hurting lots of people. I'm here, Ruby is here, your parents are here. We're all going to miss you," Regina replied and I saw tears start to well up in her eyes. I quickly wrapped my arms around her in a hug.
"I won't be gone for long. It's just for the summer. I'll be back in no time," I whispered in her ear reassuringly. I felt a tear drop on my shoulder. I pushed her away from me a little bit so I could look in her eyes. "Hey, don't cry. I will FaceTime you every day and I will be back in two months. Okay?"
"Alright. Okay, but I'm driving you to the airport," Regina said with her hands up in surrender.
"Yeah about that . . . I'm driving." I told her cautiously.
"What?! No no no no no! What if you get in a car accident? You will be stuck in the middle of no where!" She panicked.
"I'll be fine Regina. I've gone on road trips by myself plenty of times before, and it's honestly really relaxing to me." I tried to reason with her.
"I think you stress me out more than my own child, woman!" she said as she sighed deeply. "Okay then, just make sure you drive safe and you call me as soon as you get to Texas. You hear me?"
"Yes ma'am!" I said and saluted her mockingly.
"Alright, now give me one more hug before you go." I chuckled before I wrapped my arms around her again for our final goodbye for the next two months.
"I love you Regina."
"I love you too sweetie." She replied.
Once we let go of each other, I grabbed my bags off of the bed and we both headed out of my apartment and downstairs into the parking garage. After I sat my bags in the back seat and sat in the driver's seat of my yellow bug Regina just stared at me as a tear rolled down her face.
"Two months," I said.
