I STARED up at my mother, taking in her beauty and wondering if I was as beautiful as she was. I couldn't remember what I looked like, I only got to look in the mirror once every three months. I knew that as an eleven-year-old, looks shouldn't matter, but I felt too ordinary next to the others.
As we walked through the city towards the factionless, I watched as the children from Dauntless leaped from the train, somersaulting onto the ground and getting back up to run wherever they were going. I smiled and pulled at my mother's hand.
"Come on, mom. Let's run." I tugged at her hand and she cracked out a smile before pulling me back. I looked back up at her and she scolded me.
"We don't run. We are Abnegation, not Dauntless." She said sternly and I dropped my head in defeat. I continued watching them as they ran and started climbing the buildings that stood around us.
I wanted to be them. I wanted to run and climb the buildings and leap out of the train; I wanted to feel as free as they looked. I remembered what mother had told me about the choosing ceremony and I was determined then and there to choose Dauntless, no matter what.
