Fay's POV:

Scientist saw it coming. we all did really, but it was to late.

I awoke to the smell of campfire. it was cold and it must have been at least 50 degrees. I stood up for my bed of leaves on the earthy ground and walked over to the dying fire. I threw in a few sticks and pieces of moss I found on the trees nearby. The sky was clear and there were clouds miles away.

I looked over to the cave that held the small frame of my brother. I could see his chest rise and fall with every breath. Dakota was six when the war of death and life had started and I fourteen. Our mother was the first to go, then kia my older sister who suffered from lupus already, she was to disputable to the virus and died within hours of mom. When they passed, my father took Dakota and I to the mountains with a truck load of food, supplies and wood. Enough to last us the first winter and spring.

Dakota had woken up and moved next to me by the fire. I hadn't noticed he was up until he gently touched my shoulder. I jumped and turned towards him. He smiled and began to speak as I read his lips and hands. "Do you need me to get more wood?" he signed while I focused on his lips. I had been trying to get better at lip reading so it was easier on him as he only knew a few signs. I signed yes and turned back to the fire. He left and I decided it'd be a good time to collect what little food earth had provided my brother and I for the last few  moths.

I looked around and could only find a handful of Berrys, a small pale of water I had collected from the river and one rabbit I happened to catch with my arrow. I was quite good with my bow and arrow, I always connected with it more then a gun, because like me it was quite and swift. I approached the now lit fire and Dakota was drawing something in the sand and dirt surrounding us. He had always been the creative one even at his young age.

I looked at him with pity as I sat down the food. What happy innocents that life had owed hm was long gone. "What a catch!" he exclaimed with a hint of enthusiasm on his face. He always tried his best to be positive.

I smiled and started skinning the rabbit as he ate the Berry's. Dakota waved his hand in the air disrupting my thoughts. I stared focusing on his mouth "Do you think we should go into town soon" I didn't catch it the first time so I had him sign. I frowned when I finally caught what he had said "no, its not safe, you know that" I signed frustrated at his question.

"we are running out of food fay" He signed starting to get frustrated himself. I left it at that to take the heat off the conversation then finally nodded. He was right, no matter how much I wanted to deny it, if we didn't go scavenging soon we would die of hunger before the virus ever touched us.

"We leave tomorrow, at dawn" I signed as I looked at his small face light up. The last time he had been in the city he was six. And as far as I knew all he remembered where the lights of the fires and houses that their occupants where leaving. "Thank you fay" He got up and hugged me and I nodded in return. Tomorrow was an adventure he wasn't ready for, I don't even think I was.
