The subway arrived ten minutes late, as usual, scattering the little scraps of litter once settled in the nooks and crannies of the rusted subway tracks as if it had spilt its loose change from its wallet. Sprinting across, it let out an ear-piercing shriek. Everything was the same. The crowd, the subway and even that YouTuber who stood there, proudly, screeching in an out-of-tune manner. But, somehow, she was there. She was the difference. Well, not that anyone around here actually noticed.
Everyone got onto the subway like they did every night but for her, it was the first time in forever that she had stepped out of a sterile, white and clean environment into the infamously unmaintained subway station. She made the difference by letting the tears slide off her perfectly dolled-up face instead of engaging in a conversation with someone about where they were going to get tipsy later, somehow she still seemed to blend in well with the crowds. Until now.
Her knees buckled, she crumbled as she fell to the floor. Murmurs echoed through the subway as people approached her cautiously, with the fear that she was psychotic and might lash out at them. "Miss?" It was a voice. From the masculinity that she somehow detected in the gentle tone, she could tell it was a male. "Are you, um, ok?" He bent down to her eye level, then, glancing at her name tag, he spoke to her again. "Isabel, you good?" Feeling the eyes of the crowd digging into her, she had that sudden surge of energy that took over her body that caused her to stand up. "Yes," peaking at his name tag through the strands of hair that obstructed her vision, she saw his name, "Thanks for your concern, uh, Jungkook." With that, she stepped off the subway but just then, he caught her by the wrist. He slipped a name card into her hand, "Call me if you ever feel down." She nodded, then, as soon as she met him, she left, footsteps echoing down the empty station.
Isabel flopped onto her bed. She wanted answers so, so badly. She wondered if she could be ill again so she could go back to the hospital. What if the outside world could never provide her with the love he gave her? What if no one wanted to love her? What if no one wanted her, not even as a friend? "There's no way out of this hole of loneliness-", she stopped mid-sentence as the name card from her jacket pocket fell out and tapped the floor with a slight swoosh. "Jeon Jungkook...," she read his name out loud as her dainty and well-manicured fingers stroked the card. Picking it up, she inhaled and exhaled deeply. Fingers trembling over her phone, she pressed the call button and he picked up, "Hello?"
