Nate
“Mom, you’re upset, aren’t you,” I asked her as we were doing the dishes.
Brittney had gone to lie down for bed since she was beyond exhausted.
It took my mom a few minutes, but then she said, “Of course I’m upset. That
doesn’t meant that I love you any less, though. You and Brittney made a
mistake after I’d already told you specifically to not make it.”
“I know, but it just sort of happened,” I said quietly.
“I know, but now you have to deal with the result of it “just sort of happening”.
Nate, I love you but this is beyond me. I know you love Brittney, but honestly
I thought I knew you two better.”
“You sound disappointed in us,” I told her.
“If I said that I’m not at least a little bit disappointed in you two, then I’d be
lying. Every mother wishes that they won’t have to become a grandma before
her children are even out of high school. Just because I’m disappointed doesn’t
mean that I’m going to stop loving you.”
I just nodded my head in response and went back to washing the dishes.
“I’m going to bed,” I told my mom when I was finished the dishes.
“Wait,” she said as I started walking away. “I know that something’s wrong so
what is it?”
“It’s nothing,” I lied.
“No, I can tell that it’s something,” my mom told me.
“I don’t wanna talk about it,” I said.
“Is it that you feel like you’re going to be a horrible dad?” I nodded my head,
and she continued talking, “Why do you feel that way?”
“Because I don’t want to be like my dad,” I admitted.
“What do you mean,” she asked me gently.
“Brittney already thinks that I’m going to leave her because she thinks that she’s
going to get too fat and ugly for me,” I told her.
“Every pregnant woman thinks that her husband or boyfriend won’t want them
anymore,” my mom explained to me.
“Whatever,” I said. “Can we talk about this later since I actually am really tired?”
“Sure, go enjoy your sleep and I’ll finish cleaning up. Goodnight, I love you,”
she said before I left the kitchen.
Ugh, it had been such a long day, I though as I crawled into bed next Brittney.
She automatically cuddled against me and I soon fell asleep.
